Javier Bardem transforms into the menacing villain Max Cady in Apple TV’s new Cape Fear series, which debuted June 5, 2026, with the first two episodes. The 10-part psychological thriller reunites the Oscar-winning actor with the role previously played by Robert Mitchum in 1962 and Robert De Niro in the 1991 film, updating the classic revenge tale for contemporary audiences.
Quick Facts
- The series premiered June 5, 2026, on Apple TV with two episodes, followed by weekly releases
- Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson star as a lawyer couple in Savannah, Georgia, whose family faces Cady’s revenge
- Creator Nick Antosca developed the 10-episode miniseries with executive producers Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg
- Bardem’s Cady was exonerated after serving 17 years in prison for his pregnant wife’s murder
The story centers on a seemingly perfect family—Anna and Tom Bowden, played by Amy Adams in her return to television—whose lives spiral when Cady infiltrates their world. Bardem’s character brings a modern menace to the role, one that showrunner Nick Antosca describes as “a nightmare for today.”
Antosca had the blessing of Martin Scorsese, who directed the 1991 film and executive produces the Apple TV series alongside Steven Spielberg. “He was very generous and encouraging and like, ‘Try this. Try that. Don’t be afraid to get crazy,'” Antosca said of Scorsese’s involvement.

A Modern Reimagining
Unlike the two-hour films, the 10-episode format allows Antosca to explore creeping paranoia and family deterioration at a slower burn. The 2026 setting introduces contemporary surveillance tools—cloned smartphones, drones, and artificial intelligence—that Cady exploits to infiltrate his prey in ways impossible in previous versions.
“Max is using surveillance in a much more highly technical and much more invasive way,” says Adams. “But that feeling of being watched, I think that’s a very timeless terror.” The series preserves the iconic theme music from both earlier versions while introducing new twists on familiar scenes, creating what Antosca calls “a nightmare remix” of the source material.
