Martha Stewart has lent her voice and image to a new Waymo campaign that positions the company’s purpose-built electric van as more than a taxi — a private, livable space on wheels. The partnership matters because it signals a push to normalize autonomous vehicles in everyday life, turning technical advances into a lifestyle proposition for commuters and city dwellers.

In a short filmed tour, Stewart treats the vehicle like a small residence, inspecting finishes, technology and comfort while speaking directly to the camera. The spot is part product showcase, part cultural positioning: Waymo is asking consumers to imagine driverless rides as extensions of the home and workplace.

Design and rider experience

Waymo’s new model — called Ojai — is an all-electric compact van produced by Chinese EV maker Zeekr and finished with Waymo’s hardware and software in Mesa, Arizona. It is the company’s first vehicle engineered specifically for autonomous ride-hailing rather than a retrofit of a passenger car.

The cabin emphasizes accessibility and flexibility. Built-in tactile features, screen-reader compatibility and a seat-mounted support handle are intended to make trips easier for riders with different needs.

Two AIs at work — and how they differ

Ojai contains separate systems for driving and in-cabin assistance. The purpose-built driving brain — the Waymo Driver — runs the vehicle’s motion through a sensor suite that includes 13 cameras, four lidar units and six radar sensors. Waymo says the array provides overlapping fields of view that can extend up to roughly one-third of a mile and that sensors are equipped with heaters and cleaning systems to operate in poor weather.

Passengers interact with Gemini, Google’s conversational assistant, for trip questions, local information and cabin adjustments. Importantly, Waymo stresses that Gemini does not control navigation or access the Driver’s real-time driving feed — it is a passenger-facing tool only.

Safety record, investigations and software updates

Waymo points to extensive real-world testing as a safety argument: the company has logged well over 200 million miles in fully autonomous mode and reports substantially fewer injury-causing collisions compared with human-driven trips in the same areas. Those comparative figures — which count all collisions regardless of who is at fault — are central to Waymo’s public safety narrative.

Yet the rollout has not been without scrutiny. Federal investigators are looking into incidents in which Waymo vehicles passed stopped school buses in Austin, Texas, and the company previously recalled and updated software on several thousand vehicles running an earlier generation of its driving stack.

Privacy and legal questions

Equipping cars with cameras for mapping and safety raises data-access concerns when law enforcement seeks footage. Waymo says its imaging is designed for navigation and system improvement, not for biometric identification, and that it will require valid legal authority before turning over recordings — possibly contesting overly broad requests.

Inside the cabin, Waymo says audio captured by Gemini is not retained, though written transcripts may be stored to help improve the assistant’s performance.

Culture, commerce and the road ahead

Waymo has been deliberately inserting itself into pop culture, partnering with musicians and entertainment venues and promoting in-car integrations for streaming platforms. The Martha Stewart collaboration extends that strategy into lifestyle territory: by associating a trusted public figure tied to domestic expertise with an autonomous vehicle, Waymo is reframing the Ojai as an aspirational private space rather than a simple transport option.

For Stewart, the partnership is consistent with her recent embrace of technology. She has invested in and used AI tools for home management and says she finds conversational assistants increasingly practical. Her endorsement may help persuade older or more skeptical riders to try driverless services.

What riders and cities should watch

The rollout of Ojai is gradual. Waymo has opened selective rider programs in cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix and plans to add Denver, Las Vegas and San Diego. The company highlights job shifts — from driving to vehicle maintenance and depot operations — and says it is investing in workforce transitions as autonomous services scale.

At the same time, regulators, law enforcement and local communities will continue to weigh trade-offs around safety oversight, data access and the economic impact on professional drivers.

The collaboration underscores a broader moment: as autonomous systems move from tech demos to public service, commercial storytelling and celebrity endorsements will play a role in shaping public acceptance, even as technical, legal and ethical debates continue to unfold.

Stewart, who has used Waymo in Los Angeles, says she is waiting for the service to reach New York — a city where, she suggests, a driverless ride could prevent the kinds of back-seat navigation headaches she recently experienced. Whether that promise translates to wider adoption will depend on how the company addresses safety, privacy and operational challenges in the months ahead.
