Scooby-Doo: Origins reveals first real-life dog as Netflix teaser drops

Netflix has revealed the first real dog to ever portray Scooby-Doo in the franchise’s 57-year history, debuting in a teaser for the live-action prequel series Scooby-Doo: Origins, which arrives in 2027.

The Great Dane puppy appears in the teaser, released on June 8, sniffing through the woods before encountering Shaggy Rogers (Tanner Hagen) and being cradled by him in his iconic teal collar. For more than 50 years, the franchise has kept Scooby animated across three theatrical films, more than a dozen animated series, and nearly 40 animated home entertainment movies, according to Netflix.

Scooby-Doo: Origins marks a bold shift for the beloved franchise. The eight-episode series, currently filming in Atlanta, follows teenage versions of Shaggy and his old pal Daphne Blake (McKenna Grace) during their final summer at camp. The pair become embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely, lost Great Dane puppy that may have witnessed a supernatural murder. Alongside pragmatic Velma Dinkley (Abby Ryder Fortson) and the mysterious Fred Jones (Maxwell Jenkins), they uncover the case that first brought Mystery Inc. together, as described by Netflix.

The cast also includes Paul Walter Hauser in an undisclosed role. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serve as showrunners and executive producers, alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman through Berlanti Productions, as well as André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson via Midnight Radio. Toby Haynes will direct the premiere episode and also executive produce. Warner Bros. Television is the studio behind the project.
