Quick Facts
- Cape Fear debuted June 5, 2026 on Apple TV+ with two episodes, followed by weekly releases.
- The series stars Amy Adams, Patrick Wilson, and Javier Bardem in a 10-episode limited run.
- Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg serve as executive producers alongside creator Nick Antosca.
- The story is set in Savannah, Georgia, where Anna and Tom Bowden’s family faces infiltration by a recently exonerated prisoner.
Set in 2026, the series reimagines the classic revenge thriller with contemporary elements including social media, drones, and digital surveillance. Bardem’s Max Cady is exonerated after 17 years in prison for a killing he claims he didn’t commit and begins infiltrating the lives of the lawyer couple and their two children, each harboring secrets of their own.
Creator Nick Antosca designed the adaptation to honor the 1962 original and Martin Scorsese’s 1991 remake while creating what he calls “a nightmare for today.” The series expands the psychological tension across 10 hours rather than the two-hour runtime of the films, allowing for deeper exploration of family dysfunction and creeping paranoia.
Antosca received encouragement from Scorsese during development. “He was very generous and encouraging and like, ‘Try this. Try that. Don’t be afraid to get crazy,'” Antosca said of the legendary director. The new version retains the iconic theme music from both previous versions while incorporating modern surveillance techniques unavailable in earlier adaptations.
Adams plays a lawyer navigating her family’s unraveling while confronting the invasive methods Cady uses to terrorize them. “Max is using surveillance in a much more highly technical and much more invasive way,” Adams explained. “But that feeling of being watched, I think that’s a very timeless terror.”
