SF Giants beat Cubs 2-1 in 10 innings at Wrigley Field

The San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1 in 10 innings Sunday night at Wrigley Field, securing a series win and capping a 5-5 road trip with a dramatic extra-inning victory.

Quick Facts

  • Matt Chapman singled in the top of the 10th inning to drive in the go-ahead run
  • Jung Hoo Lee extended his hitting streak to a career-high 15 games with an RBI single in the first inning
  • Dylan Smith earned his first career save, striking out Michael Conforto and recording two popouts in the bottom of the 10th
  • The Giants bounced back one day after losing to the Cubs 3-2 in 10 innings on Saturday

Chapman’s single to right field scored pinch-runner Jonah Cox, the automatic runner in the 10th inning, giving San Francisco the lead it would not relinquish. The Cubs mounted a threat in the bottom of the 10th when Pete Crow-Armstrong stole his 14th base of the season, but Smith closed out the victory without allowing a run.

Lee, who is batting .483 over his 15-game hitting streak—the longest active streak in the majors—gave the Giants an early advantage with his two-out RBI single off Cubs starter Jameson Taillon in the first inning. The Cubs tied the game in the third on three consecutive singles from Carson Kelly, Crow-Armstrong, and Moisés Ballesteros.

Giants rookie Trevor McDonald pitched five innings, allowing one run on four hits while walking three and striking out six. Taillon departed early for Chicago with a left hamstring strain. The game remained tied at 1-1 through nine innings before Chapman’s heroics in the 10th delivered the series victory.
