Robert Napper remains in Broadmoor as Netflix documentary revisits Rachel Nickell murder

Robert Napper, who killed Rachel Nickell in 1992 on London’s Wimbledon Common, remains confined to Broadmoor Hospital, a high-security psychiatric facility in Crowthorne, England, as Netflix’s new documentary revisits the brutal murder and the 16-year investigation that finally brought him to justice.

Quick Facts

  • Napper stabbed Nickell 49 times on July 15, 1992, with her 2-year-old son as the sole witness
  • He was not convicted until December 2008, when he pleaded guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility
  • DNA evidence identified Napper as the killer in 2004, after the case had gone cold for over a decade
  • Netflix released The Murder of Rachel Nickell documentary and companion drama The Witness on June 4, 2026

Napper’s current life at Broadmoor reflects a stark contrast to his violent crimes. According to reports, he is a model inmate who enjoys board games, particularly Scrabble, and regularly participates in sports and gym activities at the facility. However, he has faced death threats from other patients since his conviction in the Nickell case.

The Netflix documentary, directed by BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Lucy Bowden, examines not only Nickell’s 1992 murder but also the police investigation’s failures. The case was significantly hampered by a flawed undercover operation that led to the wrongful arrest of Colin Stagg, an innocent man who was held in custody for 13 months before the case against him collapsed in 1994.

Napper has been convicted of three killings total. Beyond Nickell’s death, he admitted guilt in 1995 for the 1993 murders of Samantha Bissett, 27, whom he stabbed more than 70 times, and her 4-year-old daughter Jazmine. He is also suspected of approximately 106 sexual offenses, earning him the moniker the “Green Chain Rapist” for attacks along London’s Green Chain Walk, though he has refused to admit to these crimes.

In 2013, a Broadmoor healthcare worker named Robert Neave pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office after selling stories about Napper to the Sun newspaper, violating patient confidentiality.
