Sam Tutty earned his first Tony nomination for his Broadway debut in the two-hander musical rom-com Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York), making the U.K. native’s ascent from a small regional production to Broadway’s biggest stage complete in less than three years.
Quick Facts
- Tutty plays Dougal Todd, an excitable Brit attending his estranged father’s wedding in New York
- He originally said yes to a planned six-week run at the Kiln Theatre in North London in 2023
- Two Strangers received 8 Tony nominations overall in 2026
- Tutty won an Olivier Award in 2020 for his title role in the West End production of Dear Evan Hansen
In the musical, Tutty’s character Dougal arrives in New York and meets the bride’s world-weary sister, played by Tony nominee Christiani Pitts. The show is a musical comedy about chance encounters and unexpected connection built on a single set and intimate storytelling.
Tutty reflected on his journey with the production, which began as a temporary engagement. “I said yes to this job on the basis that it was going to be six weeks in the Kiln Theatre in North London, Kilburn and then I was going to be done. Then two and a half years later, I’m sitting here with you,” the actor told Broadway.com. He encouraged aspiring performers to take on any opportunity, regardless of scale or pay, noting that his willingness to commit to the initial regional run led directly to his current success.

The actor praised the show’s trust in Broadway audiences to follow its story built on small details and callbacks. “I think the show trusts the audience. I’m really proud that this show makes the audience listen,” Tutty said, adding that Two Strangers proves audiences can be moved by intimate productions alongside the large-scale spectacles also playing on Broadway.
Tutty also noted the surreal nature of his rapid ascent in the theater world. “I thought I used up all my luck in getting a place in drama school, let alone getting Evan Hansen, let alone being here, Tony nominated,” he revealed, while emphasizing his focus on embracing the moment and letting go of expectations about what comes next in his career.
