Matt Damon has called Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey his toughest film ever, describing the epic production as an experience that tested him like no other project in his career.
Speaking at the Eastwood Ranch Foundation in Los Angeles, Damon said: “It was by far the hardest movie I’ve ever made.” He attributed the intensity to Nolan’s commitment to authenticity, explaining that the director “likes to shoot everything real. So there’s no kind of green screen, no faking it, no kind of studio stuff.”
The production demands were extraordinary. Filming took place over 91 days and spanned multiple locations including Greece, Iceland, Morocco, Scotland, and Sicily. The Odyssey marks the first feature film ever shot entirely on IMAX film cameras, a technological feat that required custom equipment and pushed both cast and crew to their limits.

Damon has previously said he approached the role as if it were his last chance to participate in a David Lean-scale epic on film. The actor also revealed that he lost nearly 20 pounds to play Odysseus, the legendary king navigating his perilous journey home after the Trojan War.
Nolan himself confirmed the grueling nature of the production, calling it “an absolute nightmare to film” at CinemaCon 2026. The director’s decision to avoid heavy CGI and rely on practical effects, real ships, and authentic locations meant cast members endured genuine hardship—wet, cold, and hungry days that Damon said were relentless across every new location.
The film, which cost approximately $250 million to produce, is set to release on July 17, 2026. It stars Damon alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron in Nolan’s ambitious adaptation of Homer’s 3,000-year-old epic.
