House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres June 21 with Battle of the Gullet

House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres June 21 on HBO and HBO Max, kicking off with the Battle of the Gullet, an epic naval confrontation that showrunner Ryan Condal calls “unlike anything that’s ever been done in television before.”

Quick Facts

  • Season 3 opens with the Battle of the Gullet, a major military engagement from the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons
  • The premiere date is June 21, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max
  • Production set a world record with 23 stunt performers ignited in one take during the battle sequence
  • The season will consist of eight episodes, with the finale airing August 9, 2026

The Battle of the Gullet sequence required construction of two full-scale ship sets—one in a dry tank and one in a wet tank—mounted on gimbals that moved in multiple directions. Production designer Jim Clay and his team built the ships for Lord Corlys Velaryon’s vessel and Admiral Sharako Lohar’s ship, with parts of each placed on railway tracks to simulate collisions. The wet tank alone used three million liters of water.

Director Loni Peristere oversaw months of stunt choreography and training for the cast, who worked with stunt coordinators who have previously doubled for superheroes. Actor Steve Toussaint, who plays Lord Corlys, described the challenge of fighting in heavy armor on a moving, water-slicked ship deck. “Once I put the armor on, I couldn’t move in it,” he said, noting that moves he’d perfected in tracksuits became impossible when fully suited.

Showrunner Condal explained the creative decision to fully dramatize the battle rather than simply reference it. “I’m a huge Lord of the Rings fan, and I always said it’s like if you’re making Lord of the Rings, and we’re like, ‘Well, maybe we could just say, “Well, you know man, Helm’s Deep, that was a crazy battle, you should have been there, you should have seen it.”‘ No, you have to show the Battle of Helm’s Deep,” he said at a panel at SXSW London. The Battle of the Gullet “stands out, even to those historians, as one of the worst things that happened in that history,” he added.

Season 3 is the show’s largest production to date by scale and scope. The season will explore themes of power and leadership, with Condal describing a sense of “inexorability”—the feeling that the civil war has become unstoppable. The series has been picked up for a fourth season.
