Henry Cavill’s action thriller “In the Grey” has found new life on digital streaming after flopping at the box office, arriving on premium video-on-demand platforms less than three weeks after its theatrical release.
The film, directed by Guy Ritchie and co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González, opened to just $2.9 million domestically and earned only $13.4 million worldwide, making it a significant box office disappointment for the independent studio Black Bear. The film arrived on digital platforms including Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and YouTube Movies & TV on June 2, available for purchase at $24.99 and rental at $19.99.
Despite its theatrical failure, audiences have embraced the film on streaming. Critics gave “In the Grey” a 48% “rotten” score on Rotten Tomatoes, but viewers awarded it an 83% “fresh” audience rating, suggesting the heist thriller plays better for home viewers than it did in cinemas. The film follows lawyer Rachel as she enlists expert operatives Sid (Cavill) and Bronco (Gyllenhaal) to recover $1 billion stolen by a criminal tycoon.
