Mirra Andreeva won the 2026 French Open at age 19, defeating Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 in the final on Saturday to claim her first Grand Slam title. The Russian teenager became the youngest women’s singles champion at Roland Garros since Monica Seles won the tournament in 1992.
Quick Facts
- Andreeva, ranked eighth, beat 114th-ranked Chwalinska in straight sets
- She is the youngest Roland Garros champion since Monica Seles, who won in 1992 at age 18
- Chwalinska was attempting to become the first qualifier to win the French Open title
- Andreeva has won five WTA titles before claiming her first major
Andreeva has been recognized as a Grand Slam contender since she burst onto the professional circuit as a 15-year-old at the 2023 Madrid Open. She reached the quarterfinals of that WTA 1000 event, becoming the third-youngest player to win a main-draw match at that level.
The final played under mostly sunny skies with wind as a factor on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Chwalinska entered the match with strong momentum as a qualifier, but Andreeva found ways to hit through the wind and counter her opponent’s array of spins and drop shots.

Andreeva’s path to the title included a semifinal victory over Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, 6-1, 6-3. That match drew attention when Kostyuk refused to shake Andreeva’s hand—a stance Ukrainian players have taken against Russian competitors since the 2022 invasion. Andreeva has been competing under neutral status without her country’s flag due to the conflict.
Her coach, Conchita Martinez, lost the 2000 French Open final but has guided Andreeva further than her own major achievement. Mary Pierce, the 2000 French Open champion, presented the winner’s trophy to Andreeva.
