Chris Robinson defends right to free speech after clashing with fans over ‘USA’ chant in Tampa

Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson defended his right to free speech after a confrontation with fans over a “USA” chant during the band’s May 31 concert in Tampa, Florida, saying the ability to speak one’s mind is fundamental to the country. Robinson made the comments during a June 3 interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, days after video of the incident went viral on social media.

The clash erupted when an image of the band’s black crow mascot dressed as Uncle Sam appeared on a screen behind the stage, prompting a wave of patriotic chants from the crowd. Robinson responded sarcastically: “Thanks for the geography lesson,” then added, “I don’t know what you have to be so proud of right now.” When audience members booed and some walked out, Robinson fired back: “For those of you f***ing booing us, some of us are not afraid. And we most assuredly are not f***ing ignorant.”

In his interview, Robinson framed his remarks as an exercise in free expression. “One of the [things] this country [was] founded on is being able to say whatever you want,” he told UCR, “and that’s both sides of whatever you pick.” He also pushed back against the broader backlash, suggesting the incident had been “blown out of context so people can get clicks and people can stir up the animosity.”

Robinson clarified that his criticism of the moment was not a disrespect to veterans. “No matter what I ever would say or do or feel about things, there’s no way I would disrespect our veterans,” he explained. “I’m a person that I wish we had moved along as a species not to have violence be the way that we resolve conflicts. But for the people who’ve put their lives on the line and made that sacrifice and dedication, I wouldn’t do that.”

The Black Crowes were performing on their Southern Hospitality Tour, which features support from Whiskey Myers and Southall. The tour is set to continue through August in California.
