Marlon Wayans returned to the Scary Movie franchise with ownership and creative control as the horror parody hit theaters on June 5, 2026, marking the first time in 18 years the Wayans brothers reunited to write an original script for the series.
Quick Facts
- Scary Movie opened in theaters June 5, 2026, distributed by Paramount Pictures under a first-look deal with Miramax
- Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans wrote the film alongside Craig Wayans and Rick Alvarez
- The original 2000 Scary Movie became a cultural phenomenon, breaking records as the highest-grossing R-rated horror film at the time
- The Wayans had lost control of the franchise following a deal with Harvey Weinstein’s Miramax, which led to their removal after the second film
For the Wayans brothers, regaining ownership meant more than a business victory. When asked what having ownership and creative control meant, Shawn Wayans offered a straightforward answer: “It means, they can’t fire us this time.”
Marlon Wayans explained the deeper significance in an interview with AFROTECH. “I think it’s important because, like Shawn said, it’s ensuring that you’re tethered and tied-in to the things that you create. These are like your babies as an artist and nobody should ever have the right to kick you off of your project.”

The path back to the franchise was long and contentious. After the massive success of Scary Movie and Scary Movie 2 in 2000 and 2001, Dimension Films—a label of Bob and Harvey Weinstein’s Miramax—took control. The Weinsteins lowballed the Wayans with an offer to return for Scary Movie 3, and when negotiations stalled, the studio publicly fired them with a New Year’s Eve press release announcing the franchise would move forward without them.
Marlon remained vocal about the experience over the years, describing the Weinsteins as “an evil regime” in a 2020 interview. But the dismantling of the Weinstein empire—Harvey was arrested in 2018 and sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2023—eventually opened the door for a return. New Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman reached out two years ago to revive the franchise, and the Wayans were open to discussing it because, as Marlon put it, “me and my family don’t hold grudges.”
The original Scary Movie, made on a sub-$20 million budget, grossed $278 million worldwide and became one of the most successful films directed by a Black filmmaker. Its legacy extended across generations of comedy, with the Wayans helping launch the careers of Anna Faris and Regina Hall, who both returned for the sixth installment alongside the brothers.
