Your Friends and Neighbors season 2 ended Friday with Owen Ashe dead in a lake, the climactic conclusion to a chaotic season that saw the Apple TV show’s protagonist Coop and his friends entangled in the billionaire’s death.
Quick Facts
- Owen Ashe (James Marsden) initially appears to die after slipping on marble tile in his house while under the influence of drugs
- The season 2 finale aired on June 5, 2026, on Apple TV
- Ashe actually drowns in a car that plunges into a lake during a fight with Coop, Nick, and Barney
- The finale ends with a fisherman discovering the submerged car at the bottom of the lake
In the penultimate episode, Owen Ashe lost control under the influence of drugs and started shooting at his friends after Coop (Jon Hamm) refused to help him invest and launder dirty money. He slipped on his marble floor while chasing them down, cracking his head open and seemingly dying from his injury.
Coop, Nick (Mark Tallman), and Barney (Hoon Lee) decided to dispose of the body in the lake rather than call the police. Coop had nearly gone to jail in season 1 after being set up for murder, so the trio feared the evidence would stack against them despite none of them actually killing Ashe. But on their nighttime drive, Ashe suddenly woke up, causing a violent fight inside the vehicle.

During the struggle, Nick veered off the road, plunging the car into the lake. Only three men emerged from the water: Coop, Barney, and Nick. Ashe drowned in the car, becoming truly dead this time. The finale, titled “The Night of the Hunter,” ends with a fisherman discovering the submerged vehicle at the bottom of the lake—a callback to the 1955 film Ashe had watched earlier in the season.
The death of Owen Ashe sets up major conflict for season 3, which is currently in production. According to creator Jonathan Tropper, Coop now carries a dangerous secret alongside his friends, with the weight of their shared responsibility threatening to tear apart their relationships and pull others into the web of deception.
