Matt Damon visits rescue dog sanctuary, calls ‘The Odyssey’ hardest film he’s made

Matt Damon visited the Eastwood Ranch Foundation’s Animal Rescue and Adoption Facility in Los Angeles this week to promote pet adoption while discussing his work on Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” calling the film “by far the hardest movie I’ve ever made.”

Quick Facts

  • Damon spent the day with rescue dogs including Betsy, a pit bull who has waited over 1.5 years for adoption
  • He explained that Nolan’s filmmaking approach involves shooting everything practically with no green screen or studio work
  • “The Odyssey” is set to release on July 17, 2026
  • Damon already has five pets at home

While petting rescue dogs at the facility, Damon elaborated on the production demands of “The Odyssey.” “Chris likes to shoot everything real,” he said. “So there’s no kind of green screen, no faking it, no kind of studio stuff.”

The Oscar winner, 55, appeared in a video for animal advocacy site The Dodo to support the Eastwood Ranch’s California Adopt-A-Pet Day event on June 6. In the footage, he’s seen holding Jojo, a terrier mix puppy, and playing with Piper, a blind and deaf dog. He also focused attention on Betsy, explaining that she’s been waiting the longest and “really needs a family to take her in.”
