The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s epic adaptation of Homer’s ancient poem, arrives on July 17, 2026, as Universal Pictures unveils the film’s imagery ahead of its summer theatrical release. Starring Tom Holland as Telemachus, Matt Damon as Odysseus, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, and Anne Hathaway as Penelope, the film represents one of the largest and most ambitious blockbuster productions ever mounted, shot across six countries and designed entirely on IMAX film.
Quick Facts
- Release date: July 17, 2026, followed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31
- Budget: approximately $250 million
- Production: 91 days of filming across Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Scotland, and the Universal lot
- Shot on over 2 million feet of IMAX film, a format previously thought unsuitable for intimate dialogue scenes
A Production of Unprecedented Scale and Ambition
The Odyssey represents Nolan’s most expansive undertaking to date. The director shot the film across six countries in 2025, wrapping principal photography on August 5, 2025, on the Universal Studios lot. Matt Damon, who plays the titular hero, described the production as uniquely grueling: “Every single location on this movie would’ve been the hardest location on any other movie I’ve ever done. And they just went back-to-back.”
Nolan’s reputation for precision and on-schedule delivery proved decisive in assembling the cast. Tom Holland, who plays Odysseus’s son Telemachus, called Sony Pictures boss Tom Rothman directly to request a delay of Spider-Man: Brand New Day so he could commit to Nolan’s production. Sony agreed, citing Nolan’s track record: “I think one of the reasons why Sony were happy to move is because Chris has that reputation of ‘This movie isn’t going to go five months over,'” Holland told GQ magazine. The production started on the day Nolan promised and finished nine days early.

The logistical challenges were extraordinary. At Castello di Santa Caterina in Sicily—the location Nolan chose to represent Ithaca—the production could not widen the existing hiking path to accommodate crew and equipment. Instead, Nolan’s team built a new road on the back of the mountain, ferried people and gear via helicopter, and constructed a scaffolded lunch platform 900 feet up the hillside to accommodate 200 crew members.
Technical Innovation and Storytelling Ambition
For The Odyssey, Nolan pushed IMAX technology into new territory. He asked IMAX to design a camera capable of capturing not just sweeping vistas but intimate dialogue scenes—something previously thought impossible due to the camera’s extreme noise. IMAX developed a specialized blimp covering, and Nolan himself improvised a system of mirrors to project an actor’s face near the lens when they were filming separately, allowing genuine reactions without actors seeing each other.
Nolan adapted Homer’s epic by recognizing that ancient audiences knew the poem’s setup and payoffs, while modern viewers needed both. “What I realized is, Oh, okay, to make a screenplay for this, it’s all about setting those things up, being true to those because the payoffs are incredible,” Nolan explained to GQ. The film features an ensemble including Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson as the sleazy suitor Antinous, and Jon Bernthal as Menelaus.
The production cost approximately $250 million to realize. Over the course of 91 days of filming, Nolan’s crew shot more than 2 million feet of IMAX film, a volume that underscores the scale of principal photography. Damon reflected on the experience: “It’s just so much bigger—it’s like surfing a bigger wave. A wave that’s twice the size isn’t twice as powerful. It’s exponentially more powerful.”
What’s Next for the Film and Its Stars
The Odyssey arrives July 17, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day following two weeks later on July 31. Tom Holland, who appears in both films, called the back-to-back releases “the beginning of the next chapter of my life.” Damon, at 55, described the production as likely the last of its kind he would experience: “I don’t think people are going to be given the resources to shoot movies that way for much longer. There are only a couple people who can mount a production like that at this point, and so those things just aren’t available. And, specifically, probably not for me as I get older.”
The film marks a significant moment in blockbuster filmmaking, combining Nolan’s reputation for practical effects, location authenticity, and on-time delivery with one of literature’s most enduring narratives. Universal Pictures is positioning The Odyssey as a major event film for summer 2026, with the studio’s confidence reflected in the production’s scale and the caliber of talent involved.
