Robin Gunningham finally unmasked as Banksy in massive Reuters investigation

Show summary Hide summary

Banksy’s 25-year mystery finally solved. A massive Reuters investigation published today proves the world’s most famous anonymous artist is Robin Gunningham, the Bristol native. Court documents from a 2000 New York arrest contain his handwritten confession, ending decades of speculation.

🔥 Quick Facts

  • Real Identity: Robin Gunningham, born 1973 in Bristol, changed name to David Jones in 2008
  • Proof: Handwritten confession signed by Gunningham after his September 18, 2000 arrest in New York for defacing Billboard
  • Investigation Method: Reuters traced Ukraine mural paintings, discovered historical court records, and tracked passport data
  • Value Impact: His 2018 Girl with Balloon shredded artwork later sold for $25 million, making anonymity hugely profitable

A 25-Year Grand Deception Expires Today

Banksy spent two and a half decades hiding in plain sight, building a billion-dollar art brand around his identity mystery. Today, Reuters journalists destroyed that mystique with historical documents experts say prove his true identity beyond dispute. The street artist who once said “Nobody ever listened to me until they didn’t know who I was” now faces the ultimate reckoning.

The 2000 New York police arrest provides the smoking gun. When arrested for spray-painting a Marc Jacobs billboard on the roof of a Manhattan building, young Gunningham signed a handwritten confession in his own hand. Court documents list his real name repeatedly. That evidence, buried in legal archives for over two decades, has now changed everything.

How Investigators Cracked the Code

The investigation began in Ukraine, where Banksy painted seven murals in late 2022, including the famous bathtub scene in Horenka near Kyiv. Reuters journalists interviewed local residents who witnessed the paintings firsthand. They showed photo lineups to witnesses, narrowing down candidates from three major theories about the artist’s identity.

The breakthrough came when Steve Lazarides, Banksy’s former longtime manager, revealed that Gunningham legally changed his name to David Jones around 2008 to disappear from public records completely. Immigration records show a David Jones crossed into Ukraine on the exact same date as the photographers, October 28, 2022, with the same birthday as Robin Gunningham. That man then left on November 2, matching Del Naja’s departure perfectly.

Detail Information
Birth Name Robin Gunningham
Birth Year 1973
Education Bristol Cathedral School
Legal Name Change David Jones (circa 2008)
First Arrest September 18, 2000, Manhattan

“There is no Robin Gunningham. The name you’ve got I killed years ago. Life-wise, you’ll never find him. I think it became a good gag, and then, if you want my honest, honest opinion, I think it then became a disease.”

Why Banksy Fought So Hard to Hide

Anonymity transformed Banksy from a graffiti vandal into a cultural icon worth hundreds of millions. His Girl with Balloon sold for $1.4 million, then resold for $25 million after it self-shredded at Sotheby’s in 2018, a stunt that captivated the world. Without the aura of mystery, art dealers warn the value could plummet. Reuters revealed Banksy’s work helps fund migrant rescue ships and supports progressive causes, but the anonymity itself monetizes his message.

Banksy’s lawyer Mark Stephens urged Reuters not to publish, arguing that protecting anonymity serves vital societal interests and allows artists to speak truth to power without fear of retaliation. Yet Reuters concluded the public interest in a figure of profound global influence outweighed privacy claims, especially since his anonymity has become deliberately public and profitable.

The Man Behind the Mask Refuses to Confirm

Banksy and his team did not deny Reuters’ findings but declined to comment. Gunningham, now living under the assumed name David Jones, vanished from all official records after 2008. He has maintained absolute silence, letting his stenciled art speak instead. His most recent mural, depicting a judge assaulting a protester, appeared at London’s Royal Courts of Justice in September 2025, drawing 2.5 million Instagram likes.

Reuters interviewed a dozen insiders connected to Banksy. None confirmed the identity, but all acknowledged that keeping the secret became harder over time. Art critic Robert Casterline told Reuters he believes he spotted Gunningham at the 2018 auction wearing glasses with a hidden camera, recording the Girl with Balloon shredding stunt.

  1. I don’t agree with Reuters reasoning it was more important to reveal his identity than to keep it secret!! The man helped a LOT LOT of people doing what he did and the mystery behind him made that better and easier! Now because they just HAD to get “a story out”, they could have well ruined the help for sooo many!! It wasn’t “for the people”, it was for their bloody byline!! Hope you and your organization can live with yourselves every time you see groups or people in trouble desperate for help that Banksy could and would have helped!!
