Javier Bardem stars in Apple TV’s ‘Cape Fear’ thriller series, now streaming

Javier Bardem stars in Apple TV’s ‘Cape Fear,’ a 10-episode psychological thriller that premiered on June 5 and is now streaming with its first two episodes available on the platform.

The series reimagines John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel ‘The Executioners,’ following Max Cady, a dangerous ex-convict released from prison who sets his sights on terrorizing the family of the lawyer who once failed him. Bardem takes on the iconic villain role previously played by Robert De Niro in Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed 1991 film adaptation.

Created and showrun by Nick Antosca, the Apple TV series features a cast that includes Amy Adams as attorney Anna Bowden and Patrick Wilson as Tom Bowden, the married couple at the center of Cady’s revenge plot. The show expands the story beyond the confined thriller structure of the films, introducing modern themes and contemporary fears to the classic narrative.

Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, who collaborated on the 1991 film, return as executive producers of the new adaptation. Their involvement signals the project’s ambition to honor the legacy of Scorsese’s acclaimed version while charting its own path. Bardem has spoken about how he avoided simply copying De Niro’s performance, instead bringing his own interpretation to the role through physical transformation—including tattoos and contact lenses that give his Max Cady a distinctly unsettling presence.

The series marks a significant return to the ‘Cape Fear’ story, which has been adapted three times across cinema and television. The 1962 original starred Robert Mitchum, followed by Scorsese’s 1991 remake with De Niro, and now Antosca’s expanded television interpretation. New episodes will release weekly on Apple TV through the summer.
