In a dramatic turn in Dutton Ranch episode 5, Beth and Rip Wheeler take unexpected jobs at the 10 Petal Ranch, the rival Jackson operation, after losing their entire herd to foot-and-mouth disease. The episode aired Friday, June 5 on Paramount+, setting up an uneasy alliance between the Duttons and their rivals.
Quick Facts
- Rip becomes foreman of 10 Petal Ranch at $11,000 per month, negotiating up from Beulah Jackson’s initial offer of $8,000
- Beth proposes a business plan to Beulah to market premium beef cuts, asking for 20% of profits over five years
- Dwight White, a local rancher who employed Carter, is shot and killed by Sheriff Wade during a police raid
- Rob-Will Jackson, Beulah’s son, returns from rehab early and visits former foreman Chet
After destroying their cattle herd in the previous episode, Rip faces mounting bills with no livestock to generate income. He meets with Beulah Jackson, owner of the sprawling 10 Petal Ranch, and pitches himself as a solution to her management problems. Drawing on his decades of experience running Yellowstone, Rip confidently tells Beulah that her 75,000-acre operation combined with his own ranch wouldn’t equal a quarter of what he managed before.
Beulah hires him on the spot, and Rip reports for work at 4:30 a.m. the next morning. He quickly identifies the ranch’s biggest problem: foreman Chet, whom he fires after learning about his mistreatment of the hands. At dinner with Beulah, Rip explains his decision, telling her that Chet “poisons the well.” When Beulah initially offers $8,000 a month plus a truck and house, Rip counters with $11,000, and she agrees.

Beth’s Unexpected Business Proposal
While Rip settles into his new role, Beth arrives at the 10 Petal main house with her own plan. She reveals to Beulah that the Dutton herd was destroyed by foot-and-mouth disease, then pivots to a business opportunity. Beth proposes that she manage a premium beef line for 10 Petal, targeting high-end buyers with carefully curated cuts.
Beth tells Beulah, “You are easy prey, Beulah, and you know it. Evolve or die.” She offers to rebuild the 10 Petal brand into a household name in exchange for 20% of profits, with the arrangement lasting five years. Beulah is intrigued by the prospect of attaching prestige to her operation, but Beth quickly shuts down any idea of using the Dutton name. “My name is not for sale,” Beth insists. Beulah agrees to the deal, recognizing the value Beth brings to the table.
According to TVLine, actor Marc Menchaca, who plays Rip’s new right-hand man Zachariah, expressed skepticism about the partnership’s longevity. “Based on Beth and Rip’s history, I don’t think it’s going to last long,” he said, but added that the couple appears to be building “leverage to wage a war” and moving toward “making their own destiny.”
The episode also marks a tragedy for Carter, Rip and Beth’s young ward. His employer, local rancher Dwight White, is shot and killed by Sheriff Wade during a police raid on Dwight’s property. Carter witnesses the shooting and later learns that Wade’s claim of self-defense is questionable, as Dwight’s knife remains holstered when he falls. Wade warns Carter to stay silent about what he saw, threatening consequences if he speaks. Carter leaves the police station traumatized by the incident.
At episode’s end, Rob-Will Jackson, Beulah’s troubled son who was sent to rehab earlier in the season, returns unexpectedly and visits Chet, setting up potential complications for Rip as he assumes his new leadership role.
