What Happened at the Tampa Show
During the Black Crowes‘ performance as part of their Southern Hospitality Tour, a visual on the screen behind the band showed their black crow character dressed like Uncle Sam. The image prompted a segment of the crowd to begin chanting “U.S.A.! U.S.A!” before the band launched into “She Talks to Angels.”
Robinson addressed the crowd directly, stating bluntly, “Thanks for the geography lesson.” As the chant persisted, he added, “I don’t know what you have to be so proud of right now.” When pockets of the audience began to exit and boo in response, Robinson doubled down, declaring, “For those of you fucking booing us, some of us are not afraid. And we most assuredly are not fucking ignorant.”

Robinson Defends His Right to Speak
In a June 3 interview with Ultimate Classic Rock (UCR), Robinson defended his right to express political views. “One of the things this country was founded on is being able to say whatever you want,” he told the outlet, “and that’s both sides of whatever you pick.”
Robinson dismissed concerns about backlash, stating calmly, “But be most assured, you know, whatever. It doesn’t matter. In a week, something else will come up that will stir up the hornets’ nest.” He also clarified that his remarks were blown out of context to generate engagement, and emphasized he would never disrespect veterans. “No matter what I ever would say or do or feel about things, there’s no way I would disrespect our veterans,” he explained. “I can see that for exactly what it is. Other than that, you know, I have to speak my mind.“
The Tour Continues
Despite the controversy, The Black Crowes kept the Southern Hospitality Tour rolling. The band performed in St. Augustine on June 2 and Augusta on June 4, with additional dates scheduled across North America and Europe through August. Robinson stated his only mission was “just trying to make a soulful connection with people, and we’ll continue to endeavour to persevere.”
