The Return of a Rare Hunt
Red king crab season hasn’t graced Deadliest Catch since 1999. The Season 22 premiere brought the fleet to untamed waters where pureblood northern red king crabs dwell. These aren’t ordinary catches, according to the episode. They’re described as “genetic monsters” with dramatically different anatomy than the standard species.
The fishermen faced a critical problem immediately. These crabs exist in waters farther north than the fleet has ventured in multiple decades. Sig Hansen announced he’d deploy cutting-edge technology to locate them. His strategy proved decisive and sparked jealousy among rivals.

Sig’s High-Tech Advantage
Captain Sig Hansen of the Northwestern enlisted “Wild” Bill Wichrowski to undertake a revolutionary scouting mission. Together, they deployed a high-tech, underwater remote-operated vehicle (ROV) to pinpoint premium northern red king crabs in dangerous waters. The ROV revealed the crabs were even more northeast and in significantly colder conditions than anticipated.
This move gave Sig an enormous competitive edge. He discovered thriving populations while Johnathan Hillstrand‘s Time Bandit and Keith Colburn‘s Wizard struggled to find anything. Johnathan complained over the radio, “That was my buddy a year ago. We were best friends. Now I’m getting radio silence. I’m getting ghosted.”
Rates and Competition Breakdown
| Vessel | Captain | Strategy | Success Rate |
| Northwestern | Sig Hansen | ROV scouting, high-tech approach | Impressive catches, multiple pots full |
| Time Bandit | Johnathan Hillstrand | Smokescreen tactics, blocking maneuvers | Moderate, teamed with Wizard |
| Wizard | Keith Colburn | Partnership with Time Bandit | Mixed results, complained about unfair allocation |
The Explosive Confrontation at Sea
Keith Colburn spotted the alliance between Sig and Bill. He warned Johnathan, “He is definitely working with another boat. Sig and the Summer Bay are in cahoots. Look at their course. They’re only a half mile apart.” The two captains decided to partner against their common enemy. Johnathan told Keith, “If I can delay Sig, you can come in and get it for ourselves.”
The Time Bandit executed a bold maneuver. They deployed a literal smokescreen, leaving Sig unable to see anything and forcing him to turn his boat away. Johnathan taunted over the radio, “Now you’re talking to me?” Then the Time Bandit tangled all of the Northwestern’s lines and ran Sig off course. The confrontation was dramatic, intense, and caught on camera.
“We’re just trying to find the edge of the school, so be patient.”

From Enemies to Allies in Minutes
The competition didn’t stop the episode from ending with unexpected reconciliation. By the finale, Johnathan and Sig needed to work together. The Time Bandit caught a huge pot on one of Sig’s flanks, signaling “no edge in sight” there. The Wizard caught nothing on the east side, and Keith complained, “I knew I was getting the short end of the stick.”
Sig revealed his true intention to the crews. “I wasn’t blindly tracking these crabs to the northeast. If you want to get back on the trail, you’re going to do exactly as I say.” They united to locate the edge of the crab school. By the end, Johnathan admitted, “Sorry about the smoke. We don’t have time to be enemies,” and Sig replied, “It’s all good. When you do come together and you can find crab like this, it’s the big picture that matters.”
What Does This Mean for the Season?
Red king crab represents the most valuable prize in commercial fishing. These 27-year-old hunts promise epic riches and dangerous waters. The Bering Sea has shifted, forcing boats farther north into colder, icier conditions. Will the fleet survive the new territory? Can partnerships hold when millions of dollars float below the surface?
Season 22 premiered with alliances forming, egos clashing, and captains discovering that survival sometimes requires putting rivalry aside. The stakes have never been higher, the crabs have never been rarer, and the adventure has just begun.
