$TARFACE debuts as Tyga’s new artist persona with GAVE U RACKS

Tyga has launched a new creative persona that deliberately steps away from his mainstream catalog — a neon-drenched, character-driven project called $TARFACE that reimagines early-1980s pop, R&B and synth textures. The debut single and video for “GAVE U RACKS” arrive now, signaling a broader multimedia push that ties into his film work and bets on retro production values over modern trend-chasing.

A separate artistic identity

Rather than extend the existing Tyga brand, the rapper crafted $TARFACE as an alternate performer with its own backstory and visual code. He describes the move as a way to escape expectations and explore a different creative language — a tactic increasingly common as artists build cinematic universes around music.

The project draws loose inspiration from the mythic imagery of early‑’80s Miami — think white suits, silk tailoring and nocturnal glamour — but tells an original story rather than echoing any single film or franchise.

Sound: analogue, warm and sung

The music intentionally avoids contemporary production flourishes. Instead of trap beats and modern polish, the tracks favor warm analogue synths, pitched vocal textures and production techniques meant to evoke a record that could plausibly have come out in 1983.

Vocally, $TARFACE leans into melody: the songs are more sung than rapped, with soulful hooks and vintage processing. Tyga framed the decision as an attempt to capture an authentic era-specific sonic footprint rather than repurpose retro elements through a modern filter.

Release details and collaborators

The 10-track project is being released via Empire. The lead single, “GAVE U RACKS”, launches with an official video shot in Los Angeles that serves as the first visual chapter introducing the new persona. One of the album’s tracks, “Lavish”, features Brooklyn rapper Fenix Flexin.

  • Project name: $TARFACE
  • Lead single: “GAVE U RACKS” (video released)
  • Label: Empire
  • Tracks: 10
  • Featured artist: Fenix Flexin on “Lavish”
  • Visuals: early‑’80s Miami aesthetic; video shot in Los Angeles
  • Production approach: analogue synths, vintage mixing, vocal-forward arrangements

The idea for this alternate identity emerged while Tyga was developing his forthcoming film Baby, You’re a Star. Though that movie explores the late 1980s, it pushed him to dive further back into the earlier part of the decade — the creative moment defined by artists such as Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna — and to build a stand-alone musical world around those influences.

The “GAVE U RACKS” video functions as a visual primer for the character, establishing costume, mood and narrative cues that the artist plans to expand on across the album and related visuals.

Why this matters now: the project highlights two current industry trends — artists creating fully formed alter egos to experiment without diluting their core brand, and a renewed appetite for authentic-sounding retro production. For fans and industry watchers, $TARFACE is a test case in whether a carefully constructed, era-specific persona can break through in today’s streaming and social-media environment.
