A Theater Legend Returns After 7 Years Away
Pullman has spent decades conquering Hollywood. His iconic film roles in Spaceballs, While You Were Sleeping, and Sleepless in Seattle defined generations of audiences. But his heart belongs to the stage, where he built his reputation starting in 1983 New York theater.
His last theatrical role came in 2019 at London’s Old Vic, where he starred opposite Sally Field in Arthur Miller’s All My Sons, directed by Jeremy Herrin. This Cherry Orchard marks his triumphant return after a seven-year pause from live performance.

Why A Hollywood Star Returns to the RSC Stage
Pullman revealed to Deadline that when approached about the role, he accepted without hesitation. “I loved The Cherry Orchard so much,” he explained, describing a profound connection to Chekhov’s final masterpiece.
His passion runs deeper than the script itself. Pullman grew up around orchards in New York State and maintains 100 varieties of fruiting plants in a vertical grove at his Hollywood Hills home. He’s also involved in community orchard projects, making this role a perfect convergence of art and personal passion.
The Creative Vision Behind This New Adaptation
This production brings together world-class talent. Laura Wade, the Olivier Award-winning playwright behind Rivals (the Disney+ hit series), has crafted a fresh adaptation that Pullman praised for its “great joy of language.” Director Tamara Harvey, the RSC’s Co-Artistic Director, leads the creative vision.

The original play, written by Chekhov in 1903, remains one of theater’s greatest achievements. Pullman’s character, Gaev, is the brother of Madame Ranyevskaya, an impoverished aristocrat facing the loss of her ancestral cherry orchard.
“Thrilled is too inadequate. I’m thankful to be part of this company alongside Ken and Helen, and to be working with the talented Tamara Harvey and Laura Wade. When I think of this production, set in the Swan Theatre, I have a feeling that we all are anticipating an experience of exceptional power.”

Exploring Gaev: A Character Seven Years in the Making
Pullman approached his research with both tradition and innovation. He analyzed Gaev’s relationship with his more dominant sister, noting how the character “defers to his sister, who he loves very much.” What’s remarkable is that Pullman used ChatGPT to verify his analysis of the sibling dynamic.
“I put in what I was thinking about and it didn’t come up with anything,” he recalled, describing the moment as “like new snow.” Legends including John Gielgud (1960s RSC production) and Alec McCowen (1990 Adrian Noble production) have played this role. Now Pullman adds his interpretation to that distinguished lineage.
What Makes This Summer at the RSC Essential Theater to See?
The Swan Theatre seats an intimate audience in Stratford-upon-Avon. Those fortunate enough to attend will witness three Hollywood titans on stage together. Branagh, long committed to classical theater despite his film success, returns to play Lopakhin, the former serf now owning the land once worked by his family.
Helen Hunt, an icon from her own Hollywood peak, portrays the central character Madame Ranyevskaya. The chemistry among these three legendary performers, guided by Harvey’s direction and Wade’s contemporary adaptation, promises an unforgettable theatrical experience. Press night is scheduled for July 21, 2026.
