Loves his wild Dune 3 look, Robert Pattinson: Zendaya refuses to discuss baby

The first teaser for Dune: Part Three landed this week, and the cast used a Los Angeles event to tease what fans can expect from the trilogy’s finale — from surprising character turns to unanswered questions about Paul Atreides’ future. What happened at the March launch matters now because the trailer and cast remarks offer the clearest clues yet about plot direction and the film’s December release.

Stars Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Anya Taylor-Joy and Javier Bardem joined director Denis Villeneuve at the AMC Century City IMAX on March 16 for a preview screening that preceded the trailer’s official YouTube debut on March 17. Timothée Chalamet, unable to attend in person, sent a short video message of support the next day following a subdued Oscars evening.

At the event, Pattinson — who plays the shape-shifting conspirator Scytale — singled out his character’s visual design and moral ambiguity as part of what drew him to the role. He said the look is “extraordinary” and described Scytale as unpredictable: not a straightforward villain, perhaps not wholly bad.

Pattinson also revealed he had encouraged Zendaya to sign on while they were working together on another project, noting how invested he is in Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novels. “I’ve loved these films and seen them several times in theaters,” he said, adding that Scytale’s loyalties in the book are complicated and that he’s still discovering the character himself.

Zendaya sidesteps a major plot question

When asked whether her character, Chani, and Paul will be parents in the final installment, Zendaya laughed and pointed the question to Villeneuve. The director did not give away any confirmations, though the teaser includes a brief flashback of Paul and Chani talking about a name for a child — a moment that will likely fuel fan speculation until the film arrives.

Florence Pugh — who plays Princess Irulan, Chani’s rival — joined the playful back-and-forth on stage, teasing Zendaya about the shifting romantic dynamics at the end of Part Two. Zendaya said she wished she’d shared more screen time with Pugh’s character in the previous movie but declined to hint at how their relationship evolves.

Anya Taylor-Joy on Alia’s intensity

Discussing her role as Alia Atreides, Anya Taylor-Joy framed the character as fiercely devoted to Paul — a devotion that can verge on obsession. She emphasized Alia’s psychic connection to her brother and suggested that that bond drives many of her more extreme choices.

  • Trailer release: Officially posted to YouTube on March 17
  • Teaser launch event: AMC Century City IMAX, Los Angeles — March 16
  • Key cast on hand: Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Javier Bardem; Timothée Chalamet appeared via video
  • What to watch for: Scytale’s ambiguous alignment; a possible child-related flashback for Paul and Chani; increased focus on Alia’s psychology
  • Release date: Dune: Part Three opens in theaters Dec. 18

Villeneuve, who left the event to continue editing the film, has framed this entry as the trilogy’s conclusion. The December release date means the next nine months will be filled with speculation and incremental reveals as marketing ramps up.

Why this matters: the trailer and comments from the cast provide the clearest hints yet about character arcs and the story’s stakes. For longtime fans of Herbert’s novels and viewers who followed Villeneuve’s earlier films, these moments help set expectations for how the cinematic saga will resolve.

Expect more trailers, interviews and festival appearances before December. In the meantime, the teaser’s small revelations — and what the actors would not confirm — give audiences plenty to debate.
