The Long Wait Since New Horizons
The Orville: New Horizons debuted on Hulu in June 2022, marking the show’s third season. The series originally premiered on Fox in 2017 and ran for two seasons there before finding a home on the streaming platform.
Since that final episode aired nearly four years ago, fans have wondered if Captain Ed Mercer and his innovative starship crew would return to the 25th century. MacFarlane confirmed fans won’t get answers until his schedule permits active production.

Why Production Is Delayed Despite Finished Scripts
MacFarlane is juggling multiple major projects that have kept him away from The Orville. He’s actively working on Family Guy and American Dad, plus he’s promoting Season 2 of Peacock’s Ted.
“I’m the problem,” MacFarlane said candidly in his interview. He explained that The Orville requires an ambitious budget and cannot be produced without his direct involvement as creator and star. Production could move quickly once circumstances change.
Season 4 Details and Cast Uncertainty
| Detail | Information |
| Episode Count | 10 episodes |
| Streaming Platform | Hulu |
| Lead Actor | Seth MacFarlane (Captain Ed Mercer) |
| First Officer | TBA (Adrianne Palicki unlikely to return) |
“I will be honest with you: Season 4 is written. It’s just a question of when we have the time to produce it.”
— Seth MacFarlane, Creator and Star of The Orville
The Returning Cast and What to Expect
The Orville Season 3 featured Penny Johnson Jerald as Chief Medical Officer Claire Finn, Scott Grimes as Lieutenant Gordon Malloy, Peter Macon as the alien second officer Bortus, plus Jessica Szohr and Anne Winters. MacFarlane says the cast is eager to return, though actress Adrianne Palicki stated she won’t be back to play first officer and MacFarlane’s ex-wife Commander Kelly Grayson.
Palicki explained that the production breaks between seasons made it difficult to remain committed to the project. The 25th-century sci-fi series requires extensive filming and Palicki needed stability for other work opportunities.
When Could Season 4 Actually Premiere?
MacFarlane emphasized that when he finally finds the time to shoot, the crew can hit the ground running. All scripts are locked, so pre-production could move quickly. However, he declined to provide any target date for when his schedule might clear.
Fans shouldn’t expect announcements from Hulu until MacFarlane commits to a production timeline. The ball is squarely in his court, but the good news is that the creative work is finished and the network is ready to greenlight production whenever The Orville becomes his priority.
