Jack Nicholson is warming to the idea of returning to film after a 16-year absence, with the 89-year-old actor’s inner circle now convinced he still has something meaningful to offer the big screen. The legendary Oscar winner, who turned 89 on April 22, has been largely out of the spotlight since his last film role in 2010’s “How Do You Know,” but recent reports suggest a shift in his thinking about a potential comeback.
According to a source close to Nicholson, “a lot of his old Hollywood agents and friends have been trying to get him to agree to take on another project for one last hurrah,” and “lately, Jack seems to be warming to the idea.” The source adds that “they all feel like he still has something to offer.”
Director James L. Brooks, who frequently collaborated with Nicholson on films including “As Good As It Gets” (1997) and “Terms of Endearment” (1983), recently offered an encouraging update. “I don’t think he stopped,” Brooks told People in December 2025. “I mean, he’s gotten scripts, he’s reading them, and I’m sure we’ll be seeing them.” Brooks made the comments after Nicholson made a rare public appearance at SNL50 in February 2025.
Despite his largely reclusive lifestyle in recent years, Nicholson’s family has been a major source of encouragement. A source told Closer that “he’s very close to his kids and they’ve really shown up for him in his later years.” His daughter Lorraine, 36, shared a rare birthday photo of him on Instagram in April, delighting fans who rarely see the actor in public. His son Ray, who has followed in his father’s footsteps as an actor, “would love the chance to do a movie with his dad,” according to the source.
The actor’s potential return would come with some practical considerations. While Nicholson “doesn’t have the energy he used to have so he’s not going to be up for late-night shoots or early morning call times,” insiders believe “he would actually really do well being back on set.” Nicholson has never officially announced his retirement, but his 16-year gap from acting represents one of the longest absences of his storied career.
