Betty Gilpin has nothing but effusive praise for her costar Jennifer Lopez after working together on the Netflix rom-com Office Romance, which premiered June 5. In an exclusive interview with People, the 39-year-old actress called Lopez “the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen up close.”
“It’s crazy. It’s so much crazier than you could ever imagine,” Gilpin said. “She’s an alien on this earth, aesthetically.” Beyond Lopez’s appearance, Gilpin emphasized her acting talents and essential rom-com qualities, describing the 56-year-old star as “the rom-com queen” who possesses both brilliance as an actress and the willingness to make fun of herself on screen.
Gilpin, best known for her Emmy-nominated role as Debbie “Liberty Belle” Eagan in Netflix’s GLOW (2017-2019), noted that Lopez brought authenticity to her performance. “She’s just that kind of actor. She’s just so available and playful and brilliant and sexy and loves what she does,” Gilpin explained. The two actresses play executives at an airline company in the film, directed by Ol Parker and co-written by Brett Goldstein and Joe Kelly, with Goldstein also starring as a rising lawyer whose character begins falling for Lopez’s CEO.
A key ingredient in any successful romantic comedy is chemistry between leads, and Goldstein and Lopez delivered on that front. Gilpin observed that their connection “was really there from day one,” noting it as “that thing on screen that you can’t manufacture.” She added with a laugh, “it’s hard not to have chemistry with Jennifer,” recalling their own friendly dynamic while filming. The supporting cast also includes Tony Hale, Amy Sedaris, Edward James Olmos, and Bradley Whitford.
