Caissie Levy wins Tony Award for Best Actress in Musical for Ragtime

Caissie Levy won the 2026 Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for her role as Mother in the Broadway revival of Ragtime, marking her first Tony win in her first nomination after 20 years in the theater.

Quick Facts

  • Caissie Levy won at the 79th Annual Tony Awards, held June 7 at Radio City Music Hall.
  • The Ragtime revival received 11 Tony nominations, the second-highest count of the season.
  • Ragtime also won Best Revival of a Musical at the 2026 Tony Awards.
  • Levy’s Broadway credits span two decades, including roles in Frozen, Wicked, Les Misérables, and Hairspray.

In her acceptance speech, Levy emphasized family and collaboration, saying she grew up in Canada watching the Tonys and dreaming of a Broadway career. “I’m 20 years in, and the most important thing I’ve learned is that no one does it alone,” she said, thanking her parents, husband, and support system that made it possible to balance motherhood and her acting career.

Other nominees in the category included Sara Chase for Schmigadoon!, Stephanie Hsu for Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show, Marla Mindelle for Titaníque, and Christiani Pitts for Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York). Joshua Henry won Best Actor in a Musical for his role as Coalhouse Walker, Jr. in the same production, making Ragtime the first musical revival to win both lead acting Tonys in 28 years.

The Ragtime revival opened October 16, 2025, at Lincoln Center Theater’s Vivian Beaumont and is scheduled to continue through August 2, 2026. The production is based on E.L. Doctorow’s novel and features music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally. The show’s success follows the Tony Awards’ broader celebration of Broadway’s musical heritage, with multiple revivals earning top honors this year.
