Javier Bardem transforms into menacing Max Cady in Apple TV’s psychological thriller “Cape Fear,” which premiered June 5, 2026, with the first two episodes now streaming. The 10-episode limited series marks a new adaptation of the classic 1962 thriller and its acclaimed 1991 Martin Scorsese remake, this time reimagined as a contemporary limited series.
The series is created, showrun, and executive produced by Nick Antosca, with Scorsese and Steven Spielberg serving as executive producers. Bardem stars alongside Amy Adams, who plays attorney Anna Bowden, and Patrick Wilson, who portrays her husband Tom Bowden. The cast also includes Lily Collias, Joe Anders, and a supporting ensemble featuring CCH Pounder and Jamie Hector.
In this iteration, Max Cady is released from prison after 17 years following new evidence that suggests he may not have committed the murder he was convicted of. The narrative centers on the psychological tension when Cady targets the attorneys responsible for his conviction, setting his sights on revenge against the Bowden family. The series draws inspiration from both the 1962 film directed by J. Lee Thompson and the 1991 Scorsese remake, as well as the 1957 John D. MacDonald novel “The Executioners” that inspired both predecessors.

Critical Reception
Bardem’s performance has emerged as the centerpiece of the series. Time’s television critic Judy Berman noted that “No actor is more suited to remake Max Cady in his own image than Javier Bardem, a master of charm and menace.” She further observed that “Bardem’s is the rare lead performance powerful enough to carry a show,” noting his ability to work “like an audio engineer, crossfading between charm and wrath, woundedness and belligerence.”
The series airs new episodes every Friday through July 31, 2026, on Apple TV. The show is produced by UCP (a division of Universal Studio Group) and Amblin Television, with director Morten Tyldum helming the pilot and serving as executive producer.
