Jack Nicholson, at age 89, is warming to the idea of returning to film after a 16-year hiatus, according to reports from his inner circle and longtime collaborator director James L. Brooks. The legendary actor last appeared on screen in 2010’s “How Do You Know,” but sources say he’s now reading scripts again and reconsidering a comeback.
Brooks told People magazine in December 2025 that Nicholson hasn’t truly retired from acting. “Oh, I don’t think he stopped,” Brooks said. “I mean, he’s gotten scripts, he’s reading them, and I’m sure we’ll be seeing them.”
According to sources close to the actor, Hollywood agents and friends have been encouraging Nicholson to take on one final project. “A lot of his old Hollywood agents and friends have been trying to get him to agree to take on another project for one last hurrah,” a source told Closer Weekly in April 2026. “They all feel like he still has something to offer and lately, Jack seems to be warming to the idea.”

Nicholson’s children are reportedly supportive of a potential return. His son Ray, who has appeared in films including “Smile 2” and “Novacaine,” would welcome the chance to work alongside his father on a film project. While the actor doesn’t have the energy he once did and couldn’t handle demanding schedules with late-night shoots or early morning call times, his inner circle believes he would perform well on set.
The three-time Oscar winner has largely remained out of the public eye in recent years, residing at his home in the Hollywood Hills. He made a rare appearance in February 2025 when he attended the SNL50 Anniversary Special, introducing Adam Sandler’s musical performance.
