Boston Blue wrapped its first season on Friday, May 22, with a cliffhanger finale that left one character’s fate uncertain and set up major storylines for fall 2026. The CBS spinoff, which stars Donnie Wahlberg as detective Danny Reagan and Sonequa Martin-Green as Det. Lena Silver, ended with a shocking attack that has viewers eager for the show’s return.
The finale, titled “Patrol,” culminates a season of investigations, family drama, and romantic tension. Lena is shot while investigating a smuggling operation and suffers a punctured lung and nerve damage. The episode also brings Lena face-to-face with her biological father, Chris Williams, for the first time after her mother Mae kept them apart for years.
The season’s biggest cliffhanger involves Detective Brian Rodgers, Lena’s boyfriend, who had just been offered a position with the DEA. As he drives to meet the extended Silver family for dinner, a truck intentionally rams his car, pushing the vehicle into the Charles River. Showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier have kept silent about his fate and the identity of the driver, but confirmed the attack will “galvanize family” in season 2.

Danny Reagan also experiences a turning point in the finale. After nearly losing Lena and reconnecting with his ex-girlfriend and former partner Maria Baez, who returns from New York, Danny decides to pursue the sergeant’s exam. “If I’m in a command position, I can be for Sean what my dad was for me,” he tells Maria, referring to his son Sean, who works as a patrol officer in Boston.
CBS renewed Boston Blue for a second season in December 2025, just six episodes into the first run. Season 2 will air on Friday nights at 10/9c on CBS this fall, though an exact premiere date has not yet been announced. The show also welcomes back Blue Bloods characters, including Maria Baez and Joe Hill, Danny’s nephew, who appear in the finale to bridge the two series.
