Brett Goldstein’s ‘Office Romance’ debuts at #1 on Netflix with Jennifer Lopez

Brett Goldstein’s rom-com ‘Office Romance’ debuted at number one on Netflix worldwide, marking an immediate streaming success for the film that pairs the actor with Jennifer Lopez.

Quick Facts

  • Office Romance premiered on Netflix on June 5, 2026
  • The film stars Jennifer Lopez as Jackie Cruz, an airline CEO, and Brett Goldstein as Daniel Blanchflower, a company lawyer
  • Brett Goldstein co-wrote the screenplay with Ted Lasso collaborator Joe Kelly
  • The supporting cast includes Betty Gilpin, Tony Hale, Amy Sedaris, Bradley Whitford, Edward James Olmos, and Jodie Whittaker

Goldstein conceived the idea for the film while filming Ted Lasso Season 3. During a three-hour train ride between the Manchester set and London, Goldstein and Kelly discussed their love of classic rom-coms and decided to write one specifically for Lopez, whom they both admired as the “best rom-com actor.” Goldstein explained to Netflix’s Tudum: “We felt like we hadn’t seen a great one in a long time. We were both like, ‘Who’s your dream person to make a rom-com with?’ Without hesitation, we were both like, ‘J.Lo, because she’s the best rom-com actor.'”

When Goldstein sent the script to Lopez, he included a note saying, “We wrote this for you. You’re at the top of our list. It’s a list of one.” Lopez, a self-described Ted Lasso fan whose favorite character is Roy Kent (played by Goldstein), was immediately drawn to the project. She told Netflix that the script gave her a chance to play a different kind of rom-com role: “Jackie built this company. It’s usually the woman who is hoping to be saved in romantic comedies. But that isn’t the case at all here. Jackie is very powerful. She has her own life. She’s not really looking for love.”

Director Ol Parker praised the ensemble cast assembled for the film, which also features Roger Bart, Will Sasso, Amy Sedaris, and others. The movie carries an R rating for strong language, sexual material, and graphic nudity, marking a departure from Lopez’s softer rom-com work of the past.
