Office Romance debuts at #1 on Netflix with Jennifer Lopez, Brett Goldstein

The office romance movie starring Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein debuted at number one on Netflix worldwide this week, claiming the top spot just one day after its June 5 release. The romantic comedy, written by Goldstein alongside his Ted Lasso collaborator Joe Kelly and directed by Ol Parker, centers on the forbidden workplace attraction between Lopez’s character Jackie Cruz, a powerful airline CEO, and Goldstein’s Daniel Blanchflower, a company lawyer hired to help the airline weather a legal crisis.

Quick Facts

  • The film stars Jennifer Lopez as Jackie Cruz, an airline CEO who enforces a strict no-office-romance policy at her company, AirCruz.
  • Brett Goldstein plays Daniel Blanchflower, a British lawyer who joins the company and immediately falls for Lopez’s character.
  • Goldstein intentionally wrote the script for Lopez alone, telling her in a note: “You’re at the top of our list. It’s a list of one.”
  • The movie carries an R rating for strong language, sexual material, and graphic nudity, marking a departure from Lopez’s typical rom-com fare.

Goldstein explained that he and Kelly came up with the idea during a three-hour train ride between the Manchester set and London while filming Ted Lasso Season 3. Both men are fans of “old school rom-coms” and decided they wanted to write one for Lopez, whom they consider the best rom-com actor. “We thought this was never going to happen,” Goldstein said in an interview with Netflix Tudum. “We had never met Jennifer — as far as I was concerned, she was a mythical creature.”

Lopez, who was already a fan of Goldstein’s work on Ted Lasso, was drawn to the role because it gave her the chance to play a character unlike her previous rom-com roles. “Office Romance is the first time I’m the boss,” she said. “It’s usually the woman who is hoping to be saved in romantic comedies. But that isn’t the case at all here. Jackie is very powerful.” The supporting cast includes Betty Gilpin, Tony Hale, Bradley Whitford, Amy Sedaris, and Edward James Olmos, who reunites with Lopez 28 years after working together on a previous project.
