Barbie movie animated feature in development at Illumination Studios

Illumination and Mattel Studios have finalized a deal to develop the first Barbie movie animated feature for theatrical release, marking a new chapter for the iconic doll franchise two years after the record-breaking 2023 live-action film.

The partnership was announced on July 17, 2025, according to Deadline. Universal Pictures will handle the film’s financing and distribution through its exclusive partnership with Illumination, the studio behind the Minions and Despicable Me franchises.

The original Barbie film, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, became a cultural phenomenon and the highest-grossing film of 2023, earning over $1.44 billion worldwide. That live-action version was released by Warner Bros., not Universal.

No release date, plot details, or creative team have been announced for the animated Barbie movie. The project remains in early development stages, with key talent and production details still to be determined.
