A Selective Return to Acting
After stepping away from the spotlight for decades, Macaulay Culkin has carefully chosen projects that align with his vision. His casting in Fallout Season 2 was announced in November 2024 as a recurring role, surprising fans who remembered him primarily for his iconic childhood roles. Culkin’s appearance in the show marked one of his most high-profile returns, arriving alongside other major additions to the Emmy-nominated Prime Video series. According to showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Culkin brought a thoughtful approach to his character, bringing specific ideas about how Lacerta Legate should be portrayed within the brutal world of Caesar’s Legion.
The Fallout and Zootopia Roles
In Fallout Season 2, Culkin plays Lacerta Legate, a Legion member who appears as the show lays groundwork for a civil war between the Legion, the New California Republic, and the Brotherhood of Steel. His debut episode featured him in a tense scene where he confronts Lucy (played by Ella Purnell) after she is captured by Legion forces. Walton Goggins, who stars as the Ghoul, had previously worked with Culkin on The Righteous Gemstones Season 2 and praised the casting. “The way he fits into this world is so specific and he is so uniquely suited for it,” Goggins told People magazine. “I’m just grateful that he said yes and that he was onboard.”

Meanwhile, Culkin‘s voice work in Zootopia 2 showcases a different side of his talents. He voices Cattrick Lynxley, described as an ambitious eldest son of a prestigious family with “a mischievous edge.” According to Disney+, the casting was chosen specifically to fit the character’s personality. In a unique twist, his real-life partner Brenda Song voices his on-screen sibling Kitty Lynxley, a sharp-tongued member of the same family. The two have brought collaborative energy to their voice work, with Song providing the confident, cutting tone that defines her character.
A Career Built on Selective Choices
Culkin‘s approach to acting has always been deliberate. He took a hiatus starting in 1995 and later returned with roles in films like Party Monster (2003) and independent projects. In recent years, he has appeared in American Horror Story Season 10 as Mickey and in The Righteous Gemstones Season 2 alongside Goggins. When discussing his career philosophy on the SmartLess podcast in late December, Culkin explained that he is technically retired but “unretires” when he finds a project he genuinely wants to pursue. Both Fallout and Zootopia 2 clearly met that standard, allowing the former child star to demonstrate his range across live-action drama and animated comedy.
