Jesse Ridgway and wife terminate pregnancy after Down syndrome diagnosis

Jesse Ridgway and his wife Ashley announced this week that they made the “very difficult decision” to terminate her pregnancy after learning their unborn child had Trisomy 21, also known as Down syndrome. The couple, who announced the pregnancy in March, discovered the diagnosis through genetic testing in April and confirmed it via amniocentesis before making their choice.

The Diagnosis and Decision

The YouTuber and influencer shared his journey in an emotional statement posted to social media on Wednesday, June 3. “This week, my wife and I made the very difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy due to Trisomy 21,” he wrote. “The choice was not made lightly. We really appreciate all of the personal stories that you guys shared with us, especially the unconditional support we received from fans no matter what we decided.”

When Jesse first learned of the diagnosis in April, he said he was “shocked but optimistic.” He initially believed the family could manage intellectual disabilities. However, after researching and consulting with doctors, genetic counselors, and family members, his perspective shifted. “I didn’t realize just how rough it is for the child, let alone the family,” he explained.

Jesse detailed the medical complexities associated with Down syndrome: 50% of babies with the condition have heart defects, 75% face hearing challenges, and over 50% experience vision problems. He also noted developmental disabilities, learning challenges, delayed physical development, poor muscle tone, and decreased lifespan. The couple learned that up to 90% of women terminate pregnancies after a Trisomy 21 diagnosis.

The Impact and Moving Forward

“We are devastated,” Jesse wrote. “This has been extremely traumatic for both of us, especially Ashley.” He confirmed that Ashley “underwent the procedure earlier this week and is on the mend,” adding that “everything went smoothly, but emotionally we are drained.”

Despite the difficulty of the decision, Jesse expressed that he and Ashley believe it will be “beneficial for our family” in the long run. “Thankfully, we had a choice,” he added. The couple plans to try for another pregnancy in the future, hoping for a better outcome. “It will take a little time to move on, but we are excited to try again in the future and hopefully have a better outcome,” he concluded.
