Shawn Wayans reunites with brother Marlon Wayans, Regina Hall, and Anna Faris for Scary Movie 6, arriving in theaters June 12, 2026 — the franchise’s first original script from the Wayans brothers in 18 years.

Quick Facts

  • Shawn, Marlon, and Keenen Ivory Wayans reunite to write and produce after 18 years apart
  • Regina Hall and Anna Faris return as Brenda and Cindy, reprising their original roles
  • The original Scary Movie (2000) opened at $42.5 million, the biggest opening for an R-rated horror film at the time
  • Scary Movie 6 is forecast to open between $35–$40 million domestically

The Wayans Brothers Reunite for the Franchise They Created

The Scary Movie franchise, which launched in 2000 as a parody of horror films like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, was developed by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans. Keenen Ivory wrote and directed the first two films, while Marlon and Shawn wrote and starred in them. The five films released during the early 2000s grossed over $896 million worldwide.

For the first time in nearly two decades, the three brothers are returning together to pen an original screenplay for Scary Movie 6, alongside longtime collaborator Rick Alvarez. Michael Tiddes directs the film, which is being produced by Miramax and released by Paramount Pictures.

Hall and Faris Bring Back the Franchise’s Iconic Heroines

Regina Hall and Anna Faris are returning to reprise their roles as Brenda and Cindy, the franchise’s central characters. In a joint statement, Hall and Faris said, “We can’t wait to bring Brenda and Cindy back to life and be reunited with our great friends Keenen, Shawn and Marlon — three men we’d literally die for (in Brenda’s case, again).”

The new film also features Damon Wayans Jr., Kim Wayans, Heidi Gardner, Chris Elliott, Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri, and Anthony Anderson, among others. James Van Der Beek makes a cameo appearance.

A Comedy Franchise Returns at the Right Time

The release arrives during a period when horror-comedy satires have largely disappeared from theaters. Box office analysts project Scary Movie 6 will open to $35–$40 million domestically, with particularly strong interest among women under 25 and men of all ages. The film opens the same weekend as Masters of the Universe, another legacy franchise revival.

Marlon Wayans has expressed enthusiasm about the project, even sneaking into a theater in February 2026 to watch the trailer ahead of Scream 7‘s opening weekend, posting on Instagram: “Just Bootlegged my own Movie Trailer! WE’RE BACK!!!!”
