A Wife, A Husband, and the Chaos That Follows
Oscar Isaac plays Joshua Martin, a millennial general manager at a high-end country club, while Carey Mulligan portrays Lindsay Crane-Martin, his interior designer wife. Their marriage is subtly crumbling beneath the surface of privilege and status. When a Gen Z couple, Austin Davis (Charles Melton) and Ashley Miller (Cailee Spaeny), capture their parents’ moment of rage on camera, all four become entangled in a sophisticated game of manipulation and favor-trading.
According to Netflix, this season explores passive-aggressive conflict rather than the overt road-rage explosion of Season 1. The beef simmers quietly until it boils over within the gilded confines of a country club, involving even the club’s billionaire owner, Chairwoman Park (Youn Yuh-jung), who harbors her own scandal.
13 Years Later, They Finally Get Screen Time Together
Isaac and Mulligan spoke exclusively with People about the massive significance of this reunion. In Drive (2011), Isaac was “kind of passing through” the set. In Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), their characters barely interacted. But now, the two have eight full episodes to build a complex married couple dynamic from the ground up.
Mulligan, 40, told reporters there was “so much excitement” about finally working with Isaac “on a relationship that is weird, complicated, true and outrageous.” She explained they spent prep work with creator Lee Sung Jin (nicknamed “Sonny”) mapping every moment of Josh and Lindsay’s deteriorating marriage before cameras rolled. Isaac, 47, called the extended production “really exciting,” giving them rare time to “build these characters and build this relationship.”
Generational Warfare at the Country Club
The central conflict pits millennials against Gen Z. Creator Lee Sung Jin specifically wanted to flip Season 1’s age dynamic. “We thought, ‘What if we actually made them a little bit closer in age and highlight that generational divide?'” he revealed to Netflix Tudum. Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny represent young love untested by life. Isaac and Mulligan represent a marriage weathered by years of compromise and hidden resentment.

What Inspired Lee Sung Jin This Time
Season 1 sprang from creator Lee Sung Jin’s personal road rage incident. Season 2 came from overhearing a neighbor’s loud argument and being fascinated by how differently observers reacted to it. He shifted the setting to a workplace to explore the boss-employee dynamic more deeply. The season was also inspired by classic films about anger and conflict, which were screened at a special curated retrospective in Paris.
Season 1 stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun were already involved as executive producers, visiting the set and treating the crew to food trucks and popsicles. Lee even organized an escape room outing (Mulligan’s idea) where both Season 1 and Season 2 casts bonded before filming began in Los Angeles.
Why This Season Hits Harder Than You’d Expect
Beef Season 1 featured two strangers locked in escalating road rage. Beef Season 2 does the opposite, it examines people who built a life together and now barely recognize each other. Mulligan noted they’re meeting Lindsay “at the worst moment of her life” but the character keeps pretending everything is fine. That tension between truth and denial runs through all 8 episodes, creating emotional depth that surprises at nearly every turn. With Finneas O’Connell (Grammy and Academy Award winner) composing the score, the show has both intimacy and dark comedy in perfect balance.
