Breaking Into Home to Save Lives
Steve Guttenberg received an urgent text message from a friend about an elderly couple trapped in their Pacific Palisades home. The Police Academy star immediately sprang into action. He couldn’t locate his own vehicle due to traffic chaos, so he took an abandoned car left behind by evacuating residents. Time was critical as flames crept closer to residential neighborhoods.
When Guttenberg arrived at the couple’s address, he found them watching television, oblivious to the danger. He knocked on their window and warned them to evacuate immediately. The couple initially refused, creating a tense standoff as the fire advanced. Their resistance forced Guttenberg to take drastic action for their own survival.
A Woman Hitting the Actor While He Saved Her
Guttenberg made a split-second decision. He broke through a window pane, fell onto the kitchen floor surrounded by broken glass, and confronted the couple directly. “I’m going to call the cops on you,” the husband protested. Guttenberg replied calmly, “That’s why I’m here, call the cops. You’ve got to leave!”
The woman began hitting Guttenberg in the head as he physically removed them from the house. She screamed that they couldn’t leave. Despite the resistance and physical assault, the Police Academy star unlocked their door and carried both residents outside where a fire truck was passing. He later reflected, laughing, “They hated me. The woman’s hitting me in the head. But her house probably burned down anyway.”
