Miranda’s Vision Brings Digital Addiction to the Screen
Dave Malloy wrote Octet as an a cappella musical that premiered Off-Broadway at Signature Theatre on May 19, 2019. The show follows eight internet-obsessed people who meet in a church basement support group, exploring themes of digital dependency and human connection. Malloy’s score blends witty lyrics, shimmering harmonies, and virtuosic solos depicting withdrawal and redemption.
Miranda stated of the project: He hasn’t stopped thinking about Octet since witnessing director Annie Tippe’s premiere production in November 2019. He noted that Malloy’s score remains “versatile, brilliant, and increasingly relevant with every passing year.” This marks his second film directing role after the critically acclaimed tick, tick…BOOM! adaptation in 2021.
