The Legendary Return of the Wilkerson Family
The Malcolm in the Middle revival has arrived with stunning surprise. Frankie Muniz reprises his iconic role as Malcolm, now a successful adult. Bryan Cranston returns as the beloved father Hal, while Jane Kaczmarek brings back the sharp matriarch Lois. Meanwhile, Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson have resumed their roles as brothers Reese and Francis.
According to sources, the chemistry between the original cast remains electric. Frankie Muniz revealed he was thrilled to reunite with his TV family after two decades. Life really does imitate art when the show’s creator, Linwood Boomer, brought everyone back together for this special event.
Brand New Characters Shake Up the Dynamic
The revival introduces Malcolm to a completely different life. Kiana Madeira plays Tristan, his girlfriend, while Keeley Karsten portrays Leah, Malcolm’s teenage daughter. In the first episode, these secrets explode when Hal and Lois arrive unexpectedly at Malcolm’s house.
The series also reveals a shocking new sibling. Vaughan Murrae joins as Kelly, a nonbinary teenager and the youngest Wilkerson. Kelly blends personality traits from all the older brothers, creating fresh dynamics. The character identifies as nonbinary and gets wrapped in comedic rivalries with Reese, reflecting classic family chaos.

— Frankie Muniz, on Malcolm’s transformation in the revival
Why Erik Per Sullivan Isn’t Coming Back as Dewey
The most controversial recast involves Dewey, originally played by Erik Per Sullivan. Sullivan passed on returning to the role despite lucrative offers. According to Jane Kaczmarek, Sullivan was offered substantial compensation but declined outright. He’s currently a graduate student at Harvard and has stepped away from acting entirely for over ten years.
Caleb Ellsworth-Clark has taken on the Dewey role for the revival. Interestingly, Dewey now appears only via Zoom calls as a traveling musician. Ellsworth-Clark expressed anxiety about filling such an iconic role, stating he didn’t want to damage the character’s legacy. His previous work includes roles in Wynonna Earp and Joe Pickett.
Will the revival spark a second season and lasting impact on fans?
The four-part limited series represents a carefully crafted comeback. Creator Linwood Boomer orchestrated the project with director Ken Kwapis, assembling what many are calling a magical reunion. The show picks up 20 years after the original series ended, with the family gathering to celebrate Hal and Lois’ 40th wedding anniversary.
The revival has generated divided reactions from longtime fans. Some celebrate the nostalgia and chemistry between original cast members. Others question the necessity of new characters and recast roles. Streamer availability spans both Hulu and Disney+, making the show accessible to wider audiences than the franchise has seen in decades.

A nonbinary character? Seriously? Was it absolutely necessary to cram that into the reboot?
And before anyone lectures me about not being evolved and tolerant enough to accept a modern, progressive storyline, save it. Try as Hollywood might, constantly insisting on saturating programming with the LGBTQ agenda is not mainstream, people aren’t clamoring for it, and honestly it’s a turn-off. Didn’t work with that creepy nonbinary chick in Billions, and it won’t work here. Sorry. Hard pass.
