Andrew Scott will return to the stage this fall for a new filmed iteration of Simon Stephens’s solo play Sea Wall, captured live across 19 performances at an Off-Broadway venue. The decision to record the run — directed by Tina Satter and shot at Studio Seaview from Oct. 16–30 — brings a venerable monologue back into the spotlight just ahead of Scott’s November screen release.
The production revives a piece Stephens wrote more than a decade ago for Scott, who first performed the monologue in London and at Edinburgh. Sea Wall follows Alex, a London-based photographer and new father whose life is upended by a sudden accident on the coast, forcing an intimate reckoning with loss and fragility.
The staged capture will combine full performance footage with behind-the-scenes material — backstage moments, audience reactions and other documentary-style elements — giving viewers a broader sense of the theatrical experience than a straight pro-shot performance would.

What’s new this time
Unlike the 2012 filmed version that also featured Scott, this iteration explicitly blends theatrical recording with documentary material under Satter’s direction, suggesting a more textured portrait of the play and its production. The timing is notable: the filming wraps just weeks before Scott’s lead role in Elsinore opens in theaters, potentially increasing attention on his theatrical work.
Sea Wall has had several high-profile stagings since its debut. A 2019 Broadway presentation paired Stephens’s monologue with Nick Payne’s A Life — a dual showcase that starred Tom Sturridge and Jake Gyllenhaal in separate pieces exploring parenthood and mortality.
Who’s behind the production
The stage and filmed production lists a broad producing team, including Seaview, Spencer Ross, Steven Demmler, Mickey Liddell & Pete Shilaimon, Linden Productions, Both/And Productions, and Pam & Stephen Della Pietra, with Wessex Grove and ATG Productions serving as executive producers.
The creative crew for the filmed presentation includes Isabella Byrd (lighting), Ben Williams (sound), Paul Yee (director of photography) and Parker Lutz advising on production design.
Producers have not yet released details about distribution or public availability for the filmed presentation. For theatergoers and Scott’s fans, the project represents an opportunity to see a theatrically rooted performance captured with an emphasis on both the work itself and the live context in which it is made.
