Back to His Texas Roots on New Album
Banks of the Trinity marks a deeply personal return to Cody Johnson’s childhood. The album title references the river in Trinity County, Texas, where he grew up. Johnson told Amazon Music that hearing the title track brought tears to his eyes because it transported him back.
In a recent interview, the 38-year-old explained the emotional connection: “When I heard the song ‘Banks of the Trinity’ for the first time, it was like a portrait flashed in my head of memories I thought I’d forgotten.” The album cover features Lawrence’s Grocery Store, where young Cody rode his bike two miles down a dirt road for cream sodas and Blue Bell ice cream.

Johnson also clarified misconceptions about his upbringing. “Everybody always assumes like, ‘Oh, Cody grew up on a ranch.’ No, we were not poor, but we were not the rich kids either. Mom and dad worked hard.”
Star-Studded Collaborations and Sonic Surprises
The 10-track album features Luke Combs on “Shoot the Bull” and Brothers Osborne on “Fool Proof.” Johnson previously revealed the collaboration with Luke Combs earlier this year, noting the two finally connected on a duet. The Texas native is returning the favor by appearing on Brothers Osborne’s next project.
Johnson has promised some cool surprises sonically. He told Katie Neal the album mixes “stone cold country” with textures from Motown, Rock, and Bluegrass. He initially winnowed 20 songs down to 16 tracks. The album pushes boundaries while maintaining Johnson’s authentic country core.

Stagecoach Performance and Touring Plans
Stagecoach 2026 runs April 24-26 at Empire Polo Field in Indio. Johnson headlines Friday, April 24, sharing the festival with Lainey Wilson, Post Malone, Ella Langley, Bailey Zimmerman, and Red Clay Strays. The festival represents the largest country music event in the United States.
Beyond Stagecoach, Johnson’s 2026 tour includes stops at Clemson Stadium (South Carolina) on May 2, Nationwide Arena (Columbus, Ohio) in July, and festivals through September. He’s riding momentum from his historic Houston Rodeo performance, which broke George Strait’s all-time concert attendance record with 80,203 paid fans in March.
What Makes This Album Release So Significant for Cody Johnson?
This new album comes at peak career moment. Johnson is a multi-platinum artist with four 2026 ACM Award nominations including Entertainer of the Year. He also beat Chris Stapleton for CMA Male Vocalist of the Year in late 2025, ending a four-year winning streak. The pressure is real: Johnson admitted to feeling the weight after winning CMA Album of the Year for Leather, wanting the new chapter to feel like an improvement.
Personal challenges have shaped recent years too. Johnson suffered a burst eardrum and required surgery back in October 2025, canceling remaining shows. The recovery didn’t stop his momentum, though. The Dirt Cheap singer is returning stronger with Banks of the Trinity, a project designed to honor where he came from while proving he can evolve artistically.
