Born for Adoption, Reunion Changed Everything

Katie began life as Denise, born to Steven Pladl, 20, and Alyssa, 15, in 1998. Alyssa made the hardest decision at eight months old. She claimed Steven was abusive, physically harming their infant. Katie was placed for adoption and renamed by her loving adoptive parents, Kelly and Tony Fusco, in Dover, New York. Katie grew into a normal girl who loved drawing comic strips and animals. Everything changed in January 2016, when Katie turned 18. She contacted her biological parents on social media. By August 2016, she moved into their Virginia home. No one could predict what followed.

A Mother’s Shocking Discovery

Alyssa had already separated from Steven because of his volatile behavior and constant yelling. In May 2017, while reading her younger daughter’s journal, Alyssa discovered the unthinkable. Katie was pregnant with Steven’s child. He claimed they were in love. Alyssa called him immediately, screaming in horror. Steven and Katie had begun an incestuous relationship that no one suspected. They got illegally married in Maryland on July 20, 2017. Less than two months later, they welcomed son Bennett Kieron Pladl on September 1, 2017.

Arrest, Bond, and Bitter Separation

Alyssa immediately reported her ex-husband to authorities. Warrants were issued in November 2017. On January 27, 2018, police arrested both Katie and Steven on charges of incest, adultery, and contributing to delinquency. They moved to North Carolina with their infant son. Both were released on bond with strict no-contact orders. Katie moved back with her adoptive parents. Steven’s mother got custody of Bennett. Katie told Steven their relationship was over.

Katie’s adoptive father Tony Fusco initially attended her wedding to support her because he felt helpless to stop the relationship. He hoped his presence showed he still loved her unconditionally. This heartbreaking decision would cost him his life.

“It’s been a difficult rollercoaster of emotions because I’m so devastated by the loss of Katie and her adoptive dad and baby. But it’s such a relief that I don’t have to look over my shoulder anymore to see if Steve is there.”

A Murder-Suicide That Claimed Three Lives

Steven’s mental state deteriorated rapidly after Katie ended their relationship. On April 11, 2018, he drove to his mother’s home claiming he wanted to bring Bennett to Katie. Instead, he killed his 7-month-old son. He then drove to Connecticut, where Katie and Tony were waiting at a stop sign in New Milford. He shot both of them fatally. Police found Steven dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Dover, New York, the same town where Katie had been raised. Before he died, he called his mother. “He said he’s next,” she told the 911 operator. “He’s going to kill himself because he couldn’t live without her.”

Will This Tragic Story Prevent Future Abuse?

Alyssa urged law enforcement to learn from this case and protect vulnerable victims. She stated authorities must “err on the side of caution” when examining incest cases. Steven’s own lawyer admitted nobody could have predicted his violence. Yet Alyssa lived in constant fear, checking her Jeep before driving, paranoid she would be next. Jackie Cruz brings Alyssa’s heartbreak to life in the Lifetime film, now available on Netflix and streaming platforms. Director Elisabeth Röhm crafted this story to honor Katie and spark critical conversations about family reunification risks.
