From Struggling Nightclub Singer to Music Icon
Hicks, born in Birmingham and raised in Hoover, Alabama, was performing in small venues when he auditioned in Las Vegas. He had no idea the show would transform him from playing 50 people at the Oasis bar to touring Southeast Asia in just seven months.
‘I felt like I won the national championship,’ Hicks told AL.com about his winning moment. His coronation ballad ‘Do I Make You Proud’ hit No. 1 on the charts. He became People magazine‘s most eligible bachelor, got swarmed by TMZ paparazzi, and signed with Arista Records.

Hicks and Richardson will revisit a Stevie Wonder classic that defined his original run. The choice echoes memories of artistic mentors like Wonder, Rod Stewart, Elton John, and Brian May of Queen who guided him weekly on that groundbreaking season.
‘That season had some of the most legendary entertainers that have ever walked the planet,’ Hicks said. ‘Those moments I had with them each week, I will cherish forever.’
“‘Idol’ has always been something that’s been very near and dear to my heart, and something that I’ve always embraced from Day One. And I will always embrace it for the rest of my life, because it is truly my big break.”

The New Single That Shows He’s Still an Artist
‘The Mirror’ isn’t nostalgia. It’s a brand-new revenge love song with serious attitude. Recorded in Memphis at the legendary Sam Phillips Recording Studio using analog gear, the track blends Otis Redding soul with Alabama Shakes energy and Black Crowes grit.
Hicks co-wrote the song with Alabama native Adam Hood, crafting lyrics about a narcissistic relationship where one person only sees themselves. The uptempo delivery packs attitude and emotion in what Hicks calls ‘one of the strongest songs I’ve ever written.’
What Does a 20-Year-Old Idol Legacy Look Like Today
Two decades after winning, Hicks hasn’t just rested on his crown. He starred in the Broadway revival of ‘Grease!’ as Teen Angel, hosted the food-and-travel series ‘State Plate,’ recorded ESPN’s ‘Paul Finebaum Show’ theme, and appeared on Jimmy Fallon’s Grammy-winning comedy album.
He ran a residency at Bally’s Las Vegas and became co-owner of Saw’s Juke Joint, a beloved Birmingham barbecue restaurant. Now at 49 years old, Hicks continues performing, recording, and embracing his ‘Soul Patrol’ legacy with grace.
Will Tonight’s Reunion Capture the Magic of 2006
‘American Idol’ peaked with Season 5 in terms of ratings and cultural impact. Twenty years later, can tonight’s special recreate that electricity. Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson returning as guest judges feels like homecoming.
Hicks is thrilled about reuniting with them. ‘I’m thrilled to be able to see them in the old familiar way, which is in the Idol halls and on the Idol stage,’ he said. The real question hanging over tonight’s episode remains: Did this generation of Idol talent measure up to the legendary Season 5 roster.
