Rachel Takes a Leap of Faith, But Nicky Ruins Everything
Rachel Harkin (Camila Morrone) faces the ultimate choice before her wedding. She creates a potion that would guarantee Nicky is her soulmate, but she refuses to drink it. Instead, she chooses belief over certainty, trusting in their love entirely.
Creator Haley Z. Boston explains the philosophy: the opposite of doubt isn’t certainty, it’s belief. Unfortunately, Nicky gets cold feet and delays the ceremony, shattering Rachel’s faith completely. What she thought was unconditional love crumbles.

According to the mythology, Rachel must marry her soulmate by sundown or death claims her. When the ceremony doesn’t happen in time, the curse transfers to Nicky’s entire family bloodline.
Victoria (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and Portia (Gus Birney) begin bleeding from their eyes, noses, and mouths. Multiple family members collapse in grotesque fashion. The wedding reception becomes a bloodbath as relatives die one by one.

“The whole story is ultimately a breakup story. In choosing herself, Rachel becoming the new witness is a rebirth. You end a relationship, and there’s a mix of sadness and catharsis.”
— Haley Z. Boston, Creator and Showrunner
Rachel’s Resurrection Marks a Bold New Beginning
After bleeding to death in the snow, Rachel is reborn as the eternal Witness, taking over from the previous one. She walks back inside to collect her things and leaves the Cunningham family behind forever.
She finds a rusty pickup truck with “Just Married” scrawled on the back, cans clattering beneath the bumper. She lights a cigarette, lights her lighter, and throws her wedding ring out the window. The Waterboys’ song loops relentlessly on the radio as she smiles to herself.
Is Season 2 Coming, and What Does Rachel’s New Role Mean?
Before leaving, Rachel warns Nicky’s nephew Jude to be careful choosing a spouse. She adds chillingly: “But don’t worry, I’ll be there to witness.” The curse has passed to his family, and Rachel is now immortal, condemned to attend every cursed wedding generation after generation.
Nicky is left traumatized, holding a teddy bear like a broken child. Meanwhile, Rachel finally chooses herself over love, finding freedom in her supernatural new existence. Her journey transforms from desperate belief in love to empowered belief in self.
