The Shocking Death That Defined Episode 500
The milestone episode, titled “All Good Things” (Season 23, Episode 13), delivered an emotional gut punch. Vance fights to save NCIS from being dismantled by the Army Criminal Investigative Division. He defuses a bomb in the evidence locker by pulling the red wire. He reconciles with Supervisory Agent Parker (Gary Cole). Success seems within reach.
But CID Agent Dolan Thompson (Matt Cook) betrays him. Thompson fires three shots into Vance’s chest at point-blank range. It appears Vance wore a bulletproof vest. The vest twist reveal comes too late: he wasn’t wearing protection. Vance is mortally wounded.

Rocky Carroll Breaks Silence on His Departure
Carroll, age 62, describes his reaction as an “out-of-body experience” when showrunner Steven D. Binder knocked on his trailer door in November 2025. Binder explained the plan for the 500th episode. The director needed something “big” and “shocking” to honor the milestone.
“I said, ‘Repeat that last part again,'” Carroll recalled to USA TODAY. “I’m sitting there having this out-of-body experience.” Yet Carroll embraced the storyline once he understood its depth. After nearly two decades on the show, he accepted this was the right moment.
The Heavenly Goodbye: How NCIS Sent Vance Off
Young Ducky Mallard (played by Adam Campbell, who portrays the younger version on the spinoff “NCIS: Origins”) appears to Vance after his death. The late Chief Medical Examiner, originally played by David McCallum (who died in September 2023), guides Vance through the transition.

“You didn’t give up your life for nothing, dear boy,” Ducky tells Vance. “You saved your agency, your legacy will live on.” The montage of Vance’s finest moments plays as he walks into a bright light. His deceased wife Jackie (played by Paula Newsome) greets him with “Hey, baby” as he enters the afterlife. The sacrifice, it turns out, actually saves NCIS itself.
“If this had happened in my third season, it would have been devastating. But 18 seasons is rarefied air. If someone offered a role on ‘NCIS,’ and said something bad is going to happen in Season 18, there’s not an actor on the planet who wouldn’t say, ‘Where do I sign?'”

Why Showrunner Steven D. Binder Made This Controversial Choice
Binder revealed the “storyline was floating around for years.” The original plan involved reuniting Vance with his deceased wife Jackie, who was killed in crossfire back in Season 6. The showrunner compared the idea to “Princess Bride,” where a character accepts their impending death. “It was not an easy decision,” Binder admitted. The team delayed the moment because they loved working with Carroll so much.
“We want to do something big,” Binder told Carroll in November. “We want to do something that shocks our loyal viewers and just really turns the NCIS universe upside down.” The goal was to remind audiences “how much they love this show” through both depth and emotional impact.
Will Rocky Carroll Return to NCIS After the 500th Episode?
The exit isn’t entirely final. Carroll, who has already directed 25 NCIS episodes, plans to return as director for upcoming Season 24 installments. “When the smoke clears,” he said, “I come back in a month to direct an episode.” The show has also discussed bringing Vance back through flashback sequences, following the pattern established with other deceased characters.
Carroll remains grateful for his historic run. “18 seasons,” he told USA TODAY, “is the equivalent of living to be 105.” He calls the 500th episode a “celebration of nearly two decades” working on one of television’s most beloved procedurals. At a private SAG screening, Carroll promises an emotional Q&A with “150 stunned faces.”
