NCIS 500th Episode Kills Off Director Vance in Shocking Twist
Rocky Carroll’s time as NCIS Director Leon Vance came to an unexpected end on March 24. The milestone 500th episode featured the agency facing dismantling by the Department of Defense. Vance stepped in to investigate and clear an innocent petty officer’s name, successfully restoring NCIS to full operation.
But the price was his life. Vance was shot dead by a corrupt agent while defending the agency he had served loyally. Carroll called it ‘a great story nobody’s gonna see coming,’ embracing the dramatic exit after nearly two decades with the hit CBS procedural.

Carroll Had Only Two Episodes to Prepare for Exit
The actor revealed in exclusive interviews that he learned of his character’s fate just two episodes before shooting his final scene. Showrunner Steven D. Binder approached Carroll mid-November, pitching the concept as something to ‘shock’ loyal viewers and ‘turn the NCIS universe upside down.’
Carroll admitted to having an ‘out-of-body experience’ when told Vance would die while saving the agency. Yet his creative instincts kicked in immediately. ‘That’s a great story,’ he recalled thinking. His directorial background helped him appreciate the narrative closure and character arc that emerged from the decision.
Emotional Final Day on Set Shaped Career Milestone
| Career Detail | Information |
| Years as Director Vance | 18 seasons (2008-2026) |
| Final Shoot Date | December 11, 2025 |
| Episodes Directed | Nearly 30 episodes |
| Age When Joining | Series regular at Season 5 midway point |
The shooting of Vance’s final scene proved incredibly emotional, with Carroll noting the deep bonds formed with crew members over 18 years. His experience directing nearly 30 episodes created unique relationships beyond typical actor roles.
Carroll said Binder declared the episode ‘a love letter to your character.’ When they wrapped, both felt they had accomplished a proper tribute. The actor’s daughter was six when he started; she’ll turn 25 soon, knowing only her father’s work on NCIS.
Young Ducky Guides Vance Into Afterlife
In a brilliant narrative choice, the interrogator Vance encountered while dying revealed himself as Young Ducky, played by actor Adam Campbell. This served as an ‘Angel of Death’ figure guiding the character into the afterlife. The moment honored late actor David McCallum, the original Dr. Ducky.
Carroll noted this was the first time Young Ducky and Vance appeared together on screen, despite Young Ducky being an established character. Vance reunited with his late wife Jackie, offering closure and poignancy to his emotional departure. The final walking into the light was the last scene shot on December 11, requiring no manufactured emotion.
“I couldn’t have asked for more. After 18 seasons, it’s the equivalent of living to be 105. You’d like to be one of the last men standing, but after nearly two decades, I feel like my character came full circle.”
— Rocky Carroll, Actor
What Will Carroll Do Next Behind the Camera?
Carroll made clear his departure from acting Vance doesn’t mean leaving NCIS entirely. A month after shooting his final scene, he returned to direct an upcoming episode. The actor expects to continue directing nearly 30 episodes worth of experience translating to future projects.
Showrunner Binder confirmed plans to bring Vance back through flashbacks and ‘ghost star’ appearances. Carroll joked he might be busier as a ghost than in real life. Looking beyond NCIS, Carroll dreams of traveling globally with a food and culture show inspired by Anthony Bourdain.
