It is true that citizens need to maintain a sustained fight for scraps of the mediascape, and while large corporations remain the ultimate gatekeepers on the internet, there is still some feedback loops with government bodies that can be exploited to challenge the enclosure of the media and arts commons. At least that’s what the folks at SaveNetRadio.org are hoping for with their campaign to pressure Washington to not kill diversity on the web airwaves. The site announced today that the previous countdown to May 15th has been extended to July 15th, but it is still urgent to act now. So if you are in the USA campaigners are asking for you to call your congress representative after reading about the issue on the site. There are ways to join this fight if you are outside the USA as well. SaveNet explains the campaign:
The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on May 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). If the increased rates remain unchanged, the majority of webcasters will go bankrupt and silent on this date. Internet radio needs your help.
