One of Britain's top awards for art -- The Turner Prize -- could go to anti-war artist Mark Wallinger, who's installation "State Britain" calls Bush and Blair "baby killers." Wallinger's piece is an homage to steadfast anti-war protestor Brian Haw, who has campmed on the front grass of London's parliament, and successfully battled the government for his right to do so, for six years running. Both Haw and Wallinger share an indictment of the Axis of English States, whose governments continue to kill innocent civilians in Iraq and other parts of the world.
Wallinger's installation, which is the favourite to win, is a careful reconstruction of Haw's posters, placards, and pictures that were removed from his "campsite" last year by British police. The Turner Prize is a prestigious award that sees $50,000 going to the winner. The Chicago Tribune writes:
The Turner Prize judges said Wallinger's installation "demonstrates art's unique ability to engage with contemporary political issues" and managed to "communicate an unpalatable political truth."
